Policeman Beaten To Death For Killing A Trader In Lagos by HenryQuest(m): 6:55am On Aug 07, 2013
The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the killing of a police corporal, Ado Ayuba, who was lynched by some hoodlums in Suru Alaba area of the state.

According to the police, the victim was beaten to death by an irate mob for allegedly killing a trader, Mustapha Mohammed, on July 30, 2013.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ayuba and another policeman were deployed to the scene to chase away traders who had illegally taken over a portion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

It was learnt that trading activities by the traders usually caused gridlock in the area. It was also learnt that some residents and motorists had complained to relevant authorities about the inconveniences caused by the traders. It was said that a construction company working on the road had also made appeal to the government to check the traders.

A senior policeman, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “Ayuba and the policeman were posted to the area to chase away traders who had taken over that portion of the road. The road is under construction by Chinese Construction Engineering Company and the company had complained that its makeshift construction site was being hijacked by traders.

“On the day of the incident, Ayuba and another policeman were dispersing the traders when things went wrong.

“We were told that the traders overpowered the policemen and in an attempt to protect himself and his colleague, Ayuba opened fire into the crowd and killed a trader (Mohammed).

“Ayuba’s colleague immediately fled, leaving him alone with the hoodlums. The hoodlums seized Ayuba’s gun from him, picked up stones and sticks and beat him up without mercy.

“Some soldiers arrived at the scene and attempted to rescue the policeman. But the soldiers were greatly outnumbered by the uncontrollable mob, which overpowered them and chased them away.”

Our correspondent learnt that by the time the police back-up arrived and managed to disperse the mob, Ayuba was unconscious from the beatings he had received.

The policemen were said to have rushed Ayuba and Mohammed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, told our correspondent that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

She said, “The matter is under investigation at the SCID. Investigations will reveal what happened.”

Have you not heard that respect is reciprocal? The police don't respect the masses, what do you expect?

I commend the masses for killing the useless bastard, the carefully crafted article first noted all the complaints about the traders and their venue of trade but little did the writer try to inform us in what manner the policeman tried to disperse the traders that resulted in him TRYING TO PROTECT HIMSELF AND STARTED SHOOTING.
Nigerians are taken for fools, many are actually fools, but until the masses start lynching those in government, those men and women that betrayed their trust and bestowed poverty on them, until that time it is the ordinary servant policemen that do their dirty jobs that will bear the blunt.

It is really sad that it has to be so, when the big thieve in some office send the little thief(policeman) to go and do his dirty biddings and the little thieve with no choice has to die for the wrongs of the big thief.
Those in the position of the little thief has to join the masses in revolution for their own life.

What am I supposed to feel?
On one hand I feel sad that a life was lost, on the other hand I feel elated that we have one less policeman on the streets.

The lynch mentality of Nigerians is becoming sickening! In this case though, I see very little sympathy going the way of the policeman.

God help us.

[b]Erm...

First of all.. R.I.P to Mr Mohammed. R.I.P to the Policeman.

This is another case of poor training. Why would he fire into an unarmed crowd to disperse them?! Why would the Police force dispatch random Policemen to disperse a protest instead of Riot Police?! Lord knows that Nigerian protests can be very violent. Nobody knows the condition that this officer found himself in that necessitated his using his firearm on them. This is just a product of a failed system.

MAYBE: If the Police Head Quarters that dispatched this group of officers to the scene had rather sent Riot Policemen armed with Shields, batons, tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets, maybe this whole debacle could have been avoided..

Its so sad to see Policemen on the streets carrying teargas guns and then those who need the teargas guns are given live ammo.

Simple truth is that the Police is a failed institution in Nigeria. A total overhaul is needed. A 5 year phase out plan. Basically set up a new Police Department, start recruiting officers with OND being the minimum requirement. The old officers should be put through tests and those that pass can be admitted into the new Police training college, while those that fail be paid their full retirement benefits and sacked. A proper Police force in needed and needed fast. Just today alone, we have read three reports about the Police on the frontpage and None of them is good.

1. Drunk Police kill 1, injure 2.
2. Policeman lynched for killing trader.
3. Policeman demanding bribe video.

This week.

4. Policemen that aided the killing of 2 teens in Lagos arrested.

What went wrong?
I believe they said Ayuba must have killed the trader before the crowd overpowered them. How can the crowd just over power them, with them first doing something unlawful to incite the crowd?
