Scores of angry youths Monday marched the streets of Owerri to the Imo State Government House in protest of alleged persistent destruction of farmlands, armed attacks and killing of natives by Hausa Fulani herdsmen in the state.

The group largely made up of young men and women from Irete community in Owerri West council area of Imo state, took to the streets following renewed attack by the nomads which left two brothers critically injured and 10 others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The incident followed the invasion of farmlands in Umuekwunne in Irete on August 8, 2013 by the some Hausa Fulani herdsmen and when challenged by natives of the community, the nomads opened fire on the community with AK-47 automatic weapons. One of the brothers lying critically injured in the hospital was shot on the leg by the herdsmen and further inflicted with deep machete cuts to the side and neck region and left for dead.

The protesting youths lamented the nonchalant attitude of the Imo state government to the plight of the community, noting that the matter has been reported several times to the government with the government repeatedly exhibiting an alarming level of indifference and taking no firm or substantive decision on the matter.

One of the protesters whose name could not be ascertained under the rowdy atmosphere fumed: “Farmlands have been destroyed, our women raped and natives killed by these armed herdsmen, yet the Okorocha led government has not found it necessary to take any action to forestall these violations or protect lives. Apparently, the Governor wants to appear a ‘nationalist’ in the interest of his political ambition. Exhibiting more kinship to the rampaging herdsmen and with none of Ideato kinsmen affected, Okorocha thinks he can afford to play politics with human lives.”

One of the banners displayed by the angry youths read: “Rochas, enough is enough”.

Earlier the same day another youth group under the auspices of the Imo state Youth council marched to media organizations in the state to give vent to their grievances.

One of the youth leaders, Mr. Frank Edede while commenting said that Imo youths also have the capacity for violence but are willing to engage the system in seeking lawful redress to the issue. He called on Governor Rochas Okorocha to rise up to the occasion, as the Chief Security officer of the state and put an end to the arbitrary invasion of farmlands in Imo state and lawlessness on the part of the herdsmen. Edede however in a veiled threat warned that, “If the governor doesn’t know what to do, then we shall help him.”

"The military events of both World Wars have proved anew that the capitalistic countries are paramount also in armaments production. No foreign aggressor can destroy capitalist civilization if it does not destroy itself. Where capitalistic entrepreneurship is allowed to function freely, the fighting forces will always be so well equipped that the biggest armies of the backward peoples will be no match for them. There has even been great exaggeration of the danger of making the formulas for manufacturing “secret” weapons universally known. If war comes again, the searching mind of the capitalistic world will always have a head start on the peoples who merely copy and imitate clumsily." - Ludwig von Mises, Human Action
