Police in Ebonyi State yesterday arrested two persons over their alleged involvement in the running of a baby factory in Imo State.


The suspects Ifeanyichukwu (24) and Gloria were arrested for recruiting young girls fromEbonyi State to Amaigbo in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State where they run a baby factory.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Sylvester Igbo, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki said one of the suspects, Ifeanyichukwu specialized in conveying pregnant young girls from Amasiri to Amaraku, Amaigbo in Imo State where the baby factory is located.
The suspect was alleged to have taken 17-old-year pregnant Uchechi (surname withheld) from Amasiri in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State to the baby factory after he had promised to link her to a provision store where she would be engagedas a salesgirl.
The PPRO said: “The case of child-trafficking was reported to the police. It is all about a teenager, Uchechi I7-year-old, who became pregnant for an Ebonyi husband.
When he could not cope with the pregnancy, one man, Ifeanyi, 24 from Amasiri in Afikpo North told the lady that he had a place where she could work as a salesgirl in Amaigbo in Imo State and he took her to that place. But on reaching the place, the girl saw other teenagers, who were pregnant for unknown men. They were housed waiting for the time they will deliver, and when this girl discovered this, she had no choice but to stay.
“That girl was taken to that place in March and on June 5, the girl gave birth to a baby boy. On June 6, the child was taken away from the girl to unknown people. After that, N10,000 was given to the girl as her transport fare to her place in Amasiri.
When the girl came back, the matter was reported to us. The girl also reported that one other girl from her village was taken there by this Ifeanyi. It was discovered that this place was used as baby factory by the proprietress, Favour, whose surname was not known.”
According to the PPRO, Uchechi later discovered that pregnant girls were confinedto the building and she had no option but to remain in the building until she delivered her baby.
One of the suspects, Ifeanyichukwu, in an interview, said he was contacted by the proprietor of the hospital to recruit three salesgirls for her.
