Daily Manna: He Is Faithful

Wednesday 28, August 2013

TEXT: DEUTERONOMY 3:1-17

KEY VERSE: “So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining” (Deuteronomy 3:3).

Fear, anxiety and uncertainty about the future or enemies often becloud our knowledge of the promises and faithfulness of God. Clearly, as humans, we are limited in some respects, especially when we are confronted with the challenges of life.

The children of Israel had every reason to entertain fear considering their bitter experiences in the hands of Pharaoh, king of Egypt and several enemies that tried to frustrate their journey and progress towards the Promised Land. However, they had experienced God’s power in Egypt and in their crossing the Red Sea. Moses needed to remind them of God’s faithfulness to His promise. God had earlier pledged that He was going to give them victory in battle against Og. “So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining….” It was a complete routing of the enemies of God’s people.

Are you confronted with the challenges that seek to hinder you from getting to your own land of promise? Fear not. Repose your confidence and trust in God who has the power to win your battles for you. His promises are as sure as they are unimpeachable. God will always fight for you; so, hold your peace. Put your faith in God and in His unfailing promises. As you remain faithful to Him and do that which pleases Him, you can be sure of your daily victory in the battles of life.

Our faith and confidence in God must be accompanied with gratitude for His faithfulness, deeds of mercy and kindness to us, our families and church.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: God’s mercy and goodness never fail; they abide forever.

Daily Manna: Despising God’s Love

Tuesday 27, August 2013

TEXT: SONG OF SOLOMON 5:1-8

KEY VERSE: “I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer” (Song of Solomon 5:6).

God created everyone to love and be loved. The most beautiful expression of love can be found in the context of marriage.

The writer of the Song of Solomon is believed to be a man who had tasted both the good and the sour side of conjugal love. Though written in very strong poetic language that evokes passion, the spiritual import of the message must not be lost on us.

Bible Scholars agree that the narratives in the book depict the relationship between Christ and the Church and we see how this love plays out in our passage today. Christ is pictured as a true Lover, the passionate and caring Bridegroom who readily demonstrates His love for His bride, the Church (believers). It was that love that made Him to leave His throne in heaven for earth to seek and to save that which was lost. His earthly ministry was fully devoted to the expression of that love by the seaside, on the streets, in the wilderness, on the high seas, in the temple, in the palace, on the road to Golgotha, on the ‘hills far away where stood the old rugged cross’, in the tomb, at the resurrection, while ascending to heaven and even as He is now in heaven. From heaven to earth and from earth to heaven, Christ has continued to love His own with everlasting love.

Sadly, this manifestation of Christ’s love hardly makes a scratch on people’s conscience. They reject the salvation He procured through His death. People who refuse to get saved despite various entreaties from Christ and believers who receive the grace of God in vain will have themselves to blame for the eventual catastrophe.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Christ is still waiting for a loving embrace with the penitent.
