So I guess by 2017/2018, and further on, some people would begin to call "Aliko Dangote a Monopoly in the Oil Sector" which would of course happen once he completes his planned 400,000 bpd refinery; this they would do as ALL THE OTHER BIG MEN AT HOME AND THEIR OLOYINBO BLOWING FRIENDS IN THE DIASPORA would have refused to build a refinery before now [even though some of them collected licenses to do so] while expecting Govt to do so.

These people will shout as their earlier shou against the sale of the PH/Kaduna refineries Dangote led to the cancellation of the transactions - what this pattern confirms as I have pointed out in times past is that "We are nation blessed with more TALKERS than DOERS" in which the TALKERS even begin to victimize the fewer DOERS; a nation where its people would refuse to see opportunities but only complain of such happenstances when someone chooses to take of the same opportunities.

solapex: The Dangote Group has said it will sign $5.55bn loan deals with financiers on September 4 for the building of a $9bn refinery and petrochemical complex to be located at the Olokola Free Trade Zone, Ondo State.

The group told Reuters on Tuesday it would borrow $3.3bn for the 400,000 barrels a day refinery expected to double the country's refining capacity by late 2016.

The conglomerate, with business interests in cement, food processing and oil and gas, also said it was seeking another $2.25bn from development funds for the refinery.

When put together, about $5.55bn will be sourced externally from financiers and the group said the loan deals would be signed with the financiers on September 4.

The Chairman, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who recently emerged as Africa's richest man, said he would put $3.5bn down as his own equity.

Dangote had in April said he would put down $4bn of his personal fortune to build the refinery, while international financial institutions would raise the balance.

The Dangote Group spokesman, Mr. Anthony Chiejina, who spoke with Reuters, said, "We are not resting on our oars. The complex, including petrochemical and fertiliser plants, could be the single largest contribution to this government's economic transformation agenda."

The 400,000-barrel capacity, experts have said, would almost double Nigeria's current refining strength.

"This will really help not only Nigeria but sub-Saharan Africa. There has not been a new refinery for a long time in sub-Saharan Africa," Dangote had told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Nigeria currently has the capacity to produce some 445,000 barrels per day from four refineries, which operate well below that owing to decades of mismanagement and corruption.

The country relies on subsidised imports for 80 per cent of its fuel needs.

Dangote said the country's ability to import fuel would soon be challenged.

"In five years, when our population is over 200 million, we won't have the infrastructure to receive the amount of fuel we use. It has to be done," he said.

Past efforts to build refineries have often been delayed or cancelled, but analysts have said Dangote should be able to build a profitable Nigerian refinery, owing to his past successes in industry and his strong government connections.

Analysts have said previous attempts to get the refineries going were held back by vested interests such as fuel importers profiting from the status quo.

"The people who were supposed to invest in refineries, who understand the market, are benefiting from there being no refineries because of the fuel import business. Some are going to try to interfere," Dangote said.

He said making a new refinery run at a profit would work even if the government failed to scrap the subsidised fuel price that has deterred others from investing.

That's a good development. A nigerian providing jobs for nigerians. Point of correction though, Dangote didn't recently became the richest in Africa, he only became the richest man in history in Africa.

Adm. Yamamoto:

You know Yorubas can never be dominated or have a chip on their shoulders. To us, an investment like this one its like buying an already well to do man an EXTRA shirt, he will be truly thankful seeing someone helped to add another shirt (or whatever) to his collections which he could and would have done by himself anyway. However, such a person will appreciate the giver (Dangote) in this case. He will make massive financial gains from this investment (and he deserves it, his personal $ 3.5 B is NOT free or dropping from the sky), however, he will also create jobs for thousands of Nigerians, the largest portion which should be his host Yorubas who have prepared themselves by getting degrees and advanced degrees in areas he will NEED! These two will work together to create massive financial wealth for Nigeria by keeping Nigeria money in Nigeria, and making ourselves richer! So Dangote gets his cut, the other banks and investors get a cut, the Nigerian population and Yoruba host states get a cut, the governments get taxes and a better economy, the guy in Sokoto or Anambra is richer because the money that could help the country has not been shipped to Dubai or Swiss bank accounts by Dangote.

Liked and well said. But, the Yorubas won't be the only competitors, they might not even be the main competitors. I think the employment playing field will be quite even. BTW, Welcome to Nairaland smiley

Unbridled captalism leads and led (especially in 19th century England) to the wealth of a few, the poverty of many and it birthed the socialism and communism which capitalists love to hate.

I think dangote should invest in the north, a refinery in SW region is not the best thing to do. If they can kill innocent northerners simply because the price of beans increased then I don't see the reason why such huge investments should be made in their land.
Funny how they hate northerners but jubilate when a northerner invest in their land.

I see a one nigeria since nobody sees anything bad about dangote's investment.

PapaBrowne: My big question is that why is everything happening under the clueless President's regime.
Under this clueless President, industries are moving back to Nigeria in Droves.
Under Clueless Jonathan, Agriculture is suddenly experience a massive boom.
Under this clueless GEJ, the trains are experiencing a renaissance.
With all the cluelessness going on, we get to see a complete revamping of 22 airports and building 5 new brand new airports as well as the privatisation of the power sector.

With Jonathan's clueless disposition to everything, we are seeing things happen that haven't happened in 30 years.

Looks like cluelessness is a good thing afterall.

.....true! true!! true!!!, under the clueless Jonathan, Nigeria was losing N365b a month to crude oil theft. What a report on your score card to take home to momma.

No need for that. He is not trying to help you. It's simply a business decision. Locate your business close to the source of raw materials for efficiency. Ondo is an oil producing state, is part of the niger delta, is relatively safe so any sane business man will choose it.

The target is Lagos and the south west market which is the highest in Nigeria regional bloc. With oil coming out of the region as well spells good for his company and being an astute businessman he can wholly trust the inhabitants to protect his back. However, he will soon face competitions from refineries in Lagos and another in that same vicinity.
Kudos to him for this job creating initiative and to all who don't know, there are many wealthy Nigerians with deep interests in Dangote Groups.

Information is power.....

Information is the difference between a money-miss-road and an investor.....

Everyday i see ppl crying that there are no jobs yet i tend to agree with Obasanjo when he said Nigerians are lazy....not just physically, but too lazy to think.....

Dangote is building several cement industries; he has started ground work for the building of a fertilizer company in auchi; he is building a refinery, petrochemical, and fertilizer complex inside olokola FZE; Indorama Eleme petrochemical has started building the world's largest single train fertilizer plant and yet lots of ppl are wasting their time crying about no job... IMO should be your slogan....Investment Meets Opportunity (IMO)...

Questions that would make you employable and a hot cake material for these industries include;
1) What does it take to build a refinery, petrochemical, and fertilizer plant?
2) What does it take to run the plant 24/7?
3) What does it take to market the products? Do i want to be a seller or re-seller? If re-seller, what license do i need to acquire and what technical know-how do i need to equip myself with?
4) What utilities/raw materials does this plant need that is not readily available in Nigerian Market?
5) What chain of products ca be obtained from this plant and how are they processed?

This projects are a 1ce in a life time opportunity for ppl to arrange their life positively.... so my advice for ppl that understand what i'm saying.....Invest in acquiring knowledge now while you can.... smiley

Building refinery in Ogun state? Is this not another Kaduna refinery with no crude in Ogun state. Why not Akwa Ibom, Imo, Cross River or Bayelsa? Ondo ok, but Ogun? Anyway is a private investment/venture, they seem to do their research better than government in term of decision making process. So they must have seen what a lay person like me couldn't see.

i hope d nigerian govt & oil producing states know what they are doing, Dangote does not enter into risky ventures & trust me,he will recover his capital within one year. . .he proved Larfarge & heildeberg cement wrong by running a profitable cement factory in africa . . . Now he is venturing into oil refining, i hope d Nigerian govt cut a good deal with him, cos when d national revenue starts going into one purse, dis time itz not only d masses dat will suffer, dere will be no more money 4 u politicians to embezzle,d Kogi state government is a prime example

I think you just wanted to comment for the sake of it! Did you read about the Yoruba beans merchants that were slaughtered some months ago in the north for no reason? And just to clear your ignorance, there was no killing of any hausa in Ibadan, it was just a protest and the state government had resolved the matter. Go and rest!

You're obviously blinded by sentiment.
On more than one occassion, some of the 'bigger' Yoruba traders going to buy beans in the north were slaughtered, people originally thought it was bokoharam.
But in the aftermath, other Yoruba traders realised it myt have been that the Hausa traders conspired to kill the late traders.
For one thing, it seemd unlikely that out of the thousands of Yorubas in the north, the visiting traders would be the target of bokoharam again and again and again.
Some eye-witness also claimed that the driver of the traders (who was an hausa), participated in the killing and the drivers were not harmed in all case.
Other Yorubas still travel to the north but when these traders do,they get slaughtered. So they stopped going to the north to buy beans and the result was that the Hausa traders had monopoly of the market and they doubled the price of beans.
The small skirmish between traders of the two ethnic groups was a form of protest by the Yorubas,no one died.
The specie (is that word correct?) of beans in question was developed in the south west(OAU) but it seems it grew better in the north.
I would still rather have an oduduwa republic but while we are here, this is the best thing to happen to Ondo state. If it even pulls through considering govt hav tried to build refineries b4

Pointers about Olokola...

1. Olokola is a coastal area shared in common by Ondo and Ogun states

2. Dangote's refinery is going to be sited in Olokola free trade zone/FTZ aka OKFTZ

3. Olokola free trade zone/FTZ aka OKFTZ is a joint venture between Ogun and Ondo state.

4. Dangote is not the only player in Olokola, Covenant Ground Group is building another refinery inside the same olokola

5. @ 10,000 acres, this is going to be the largest FTZ in West Africa.

6. Already the Ondo state government has constructed a multi-billion-naira highway from Igbokoda to Aiyetoro and Araromi seaside. This will link with another highway from Lekki to Araromi seaside. The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has commenced the dredging of the east-west coastal waterways traversing Ogun, Ondo and Delta states. The area’s electricity supply is being handled by Ondo state through OSOPADEC. The state is also in partnership with NDDC for the drilling of boreholes to supplement the area’s water supply schemes.
