What Happened To Tinapa? by 99cent: 11:34pm On Sep 03, 2013 |
Tinapa was a HUGE multi-million dollar project that was supposed to "jump-start the economy in SE Nigeria". Why did it fail? It should have been built in Lagos instead. what a waste of money. At the end of the day, building airports, malls and big buildings are not guaranteed to be successful if the right conditions aren't met. ie if enough people aren't willing to patronizing it. Does anyone know if Tinapa is getting better now? |

Tinapa was a good initiative but was not well thought. The major militating factor is the location. Calabar is ot a commercial city by any standard and such a project couldn't have been sited there. Such projects would have been successful in Aba, Onitsha, Lagos or parts of Ogun state closest to Lagos. 1 Like |

anyone know if Tinapa is getting better now?[/quote] Its not getting better, I was there last weekend with my family, if it continue like this it will be a ghost town soon.there are a lot of issues facing Tinapa, one the location is bad in the sense that the people of calabar don't have the money to take up the shops their, most of the shop owners are from Lagos, and the market is not there most calabar residents don't have the financial power to buy things there, now they sell china goods that are so bad that you cannot use as a rag in Tinapa, the state and federal gov't need sit down and find a way to revive the place. The only time you have good market there is during festive periods after then it turns back to a ghost town with just. Few customers around. 3 Likes |

^ The op is clueless. Tinapa is a state government project. They can as well locate the resort in Ogoja, it's their state revenue. The good thing is that the project has been completed. What is needed is a sensible government to utilize the opportunity and build on the foundations on ground. 17 Likes |

Continuity in government's what's killing almost of the mega projects in Nigeria. They wouldn't want generations to sing praises of a certain governor, cos they know that if they complete the remaining phases of the projects, most of the kudos will go to the initiators. 1 Like |

From what I know about TINAPA, it was meant to be a free trade zone and a commercial hub in the capacity of Dubai, the original idea was for manufacturers' to bring their products there directly in order to drive down the prices to such an extent that merchants from nearby countries can come there and buy things thereby paying custom duties to export them, however the federal government in conjunction with Nigerian Customs was not comfortable with the arrangement feeling it will stop companies from paying import duties. Opponents of that view say this would have been made up for in the export duties that foreigners would have been paying. 15 Likes |

emmysenior: Continuity in government's what's killing almost mega projects in Nigeria. You appear to be the most intelligent here. Exactly what I was aiming to type. These people wont reason if Tinapa would be in its present state if Donald Duke was still in power. How many efforts has the present governor made in sustaining tinapa, why is the calabar festival still going stronger if not for the present govts support . Why did wave making Enyimba die after the governor left. I think its high time governors started passing their illustrious projects through their legislature in a way the continuity of the projects must be law 15 Likes |

This Tinapa of a thing should have been built in a recognized commercial city like Onitsha where there was an already-existing market reputated to be the largest in West Africa. 2 Likes |

Re: What Happened To Tinapa? by Nobody: 8:41am On Sep 04, 2013 |
Politics killed it, cos am 100% sure if donald duke was still the governor, Tinapa wont be what it is Today, he started it with so much vibe and vision, was living in calabar then sha early 2000s. Then the reignin news was tinapa, twas like a savior for the pple in that state, as eveyone was just sayin''when tinapa comes dz will change, dat will change'' but here we re its 2013! Tinapa is more like a desert, where pple just go to snap pictures n gerrout. Really sad. 8 Likes |
