Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, yesterday inaugurated 14 Boards for government agencies with a warning to chairmen and members of Boards that it was a criminal offence to hold two paid government appointments.
According to him, any member of the Board holding another political appointment should choose one, asserting, “you cannot hold two appointments in government, you have to keep one and leave the other.”
The governor, who inaugurated the boards in Asaba, stated that it was in the interest of members of the boards to hold only one appointment at a time and urged them to work in the general interest of the state.
He specifically urged chairmen and members of the Boards to ensure synergy between their agencies and supervisory ministries for the progress of the agencies.
He also assured those who have not been given political appointments by his administration that political appointments are still on-going by his administration and called for patience and understanding.
“Appointments are on-going, as we move along, more appointments will come,” the governor said, adding that 20 persons from each of the local government areas in the state would be added to the Women and Youth Empowerment Committees for the local government areas.
The governor also disclosed that members of the Boards were chosen by the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while the chairmen were chosen by him to ensure that women were well represented on the Boards as 50 per cent of the chairmen of the Boards were made up of women.
He specifically urged the chairmen and members of the Boards to go back to their different wards and work for the PDP.
In a brief speech, the chairman of PDP in the state, Barrister Peter Nwaoboshi commended Governor Uduaghan for giving PDP the opportunity to nominate members of the Boards, observing that Dr Uduaghan has beat the records of Governor Ambrose Ali’s administration in terms of giving political appointments.
