The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC’s enquiry into the N17 billion bond secured by the Kwara State government in the past continued yesterday as the former governor of the state, Bukola Saraki, was grilled for the second time. The former governor was made to explain his role in the deal and to write a statement for the second time within the space of one month. He was grilled on the failure of the Saraki family bank, the Societe Generale Bank, SGBN, in his previous appearance. The bond, which is now the latest issue the ex- governor is contending with, was said to have been allegedly secured when he held sway as the executive governor of the state for eight years. Sources at the commission told National Mirror that the embattled erstwhile governor was interrogated for several hours yesterday to throw more light on the circumstances of the bond. During interrogation, the former governor was have made to explain why he allegedly negotiated to pay only N1.5 billion of the N3.3 billion pension funds he inherited. EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Saraki visited the commission in the early hours of yesterday to offer some explanations as part of the ongoing investigation into the N17 billion bond saga. He, however, debunked the claim that he was arrested, stressing that he only appeared before the EFCC team of investigators to give a statement. According to him, the embattled governor was later allowed to go after giving useful information. He said; “The former governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, was in our office again today as part of the ongoing investigation into the N17 billion bond his administration secured while he was the governor. He has given useful statement and was allowed to go. Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday put the number of convictions secured by it in the last eight months at 80. This was even as the commission also revealed that it has recovered N6.5 billion in the last eight months under review. The anti-graft body, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, yesterday explained that a total of 368 cases were charged to court by the commission, out of which it was able to secure 80 convictions. Giving the breakdown of recovered funds yesterday, the commission noted that while over N6.5 billion was recovered in local currency; $ 19, 251, 519; 20, 520 and £19, 000 were recovered respectively during the period. Beyond the recoveries, the anti-graft body said it has also intensified the prosecution of politically exposed persons, failed bank executives, captains of industries, beneficiaries of fraudulent oil subsidy payments and senior civil servants involved in pension fraud. According to the commission, a number of cases for which investigations have been concluded, would be charged to courts across the zones where the commission maintains offices as soon as the courts resume from its recess. We are sure to hear the beginning of the issue but never the end as they will find a political solution to it. After all, its a family affair. |
