Well, I know the area well because I used to work with AIM Consultants. Now does cool link own cool fm or vice versa? Anyway, the same guy - Amin Mousalli owns AIM Consultants. Are you in touch with any of the Architects or Engineers with AIM. I might still have some Paddies there. Looks like a small world doesnt it?

Panic in Lagos over 3rd Mainland Bridge
• No cause for alarm, says Adebayo
By Bennett Oghifo, 10.12.2006

There was panic in Lagos yesterday as news went round that the country’s longest bridge, the Third Mainland Bridge, which links Lagos Island and the Mainland from the Ojota-Oworonsoki axis of the state, had collapsed.
But in a swift reaction, the Federal Government assured citizens, as well as commuters, that the bridge is “safe, serviceable and is being monitored daily.”

According to the news that later became just rumours, the bridge was said to have collapsed at the Adekunle-Yaba end trapping many commuters.
On hearing the rumour, many Lagosians had been calling friends and relatives to find out where they were and advising them to avoid taking the bridge.

As a result of this, there was unusual heavy traffic on Ikorodu Road-Western Avenue Highway stretch, the other major highway that linked the mainland part of the city to the Island, as motorists going and coming from both ways had to divert there, thus putting pressure on it.

But the General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Manage-ment Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Ayodeji Ayedekun, said the bridge did not collapse, explaining that there was traffic build-up on the bridge at the Adekunle end of the road where a truck had collided with a commuter bus.

Also, the Minister of Works, Chief Cornelius O. Adebayo, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Lawrence Ojabo, said the Ministry was informed that “motorists plying the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos are complaining of unusual vibrations of the bridge”.
Adebayo said the true situation was that similar complaints were received recently about the unusual vibration, which prompted him to inspect the Bridge on September 30, 2006, accompanied by professionals of the ministry and of Messrs Julius Berger, the Contractor who built the bridge.

“A preliminary investigation carried out showed that there is no cause for alarm”, he said.
However, to be on the safe side, Adebayo directed the construction company of Julius Berger to carry out detailed studies on the stability of the Bridge structure, especially with regard to the effect of sand dredging activity being carried out in the vicinity.
“This study is expected any moment from now”, the Minister said.
The detailed study, he added, would recommend possible maintenance requirements from Julius Berger “who are experts in bridge construction and maintenance”.
Public concern on the state of the third mainland bridge stemmed from the fact that a few years ago, the Ijora by-pass bridge, which links the National Theatre and the main expressway leading to Lagos Island, collapsed.

Experts are worried that the multi-billion naira Third Mainland Bridge may have developed structural problems, particularly with its uneven surface and link joints that are expanding.

Sometimes I fell so sorry for Naija angry. The Atlantic keeps poking fun at us at the Bar beach despite our tons of petrodollar$. And yet some of our 'smart and well-travelled' leaders regularly holiday in their beach houses at the Dubai reclaimed Palm Island!!

The bar beach has a mind of its own and i must tell you, she is very, very angry.
it's as if she's mocking the construction workers there, -" you think you can stop me?"
my friends and i had to stop last night when we saw the waves from the road and actually walk over to the beach, upon all the high whatever they are building, the water was still pouring over.
it was a spectacular sight, we all stood there with our mouths open and it was amazing too
you could actually feel the anger of the sea as the waves kept coming close to us in full force.
i feel sorry for the houses and offices around and we kept asking the construction workers- is this going to work?
well, they said its the first stage,
some appeasing needs to be done to the goddess of the sea- i don't know- sounds fetish- but what else can be done again?

very funny
i hope yu dont join the score of pple dat b'liv in that tin! - spiritual forces exist but not in a case of an overflow due to technical fallouts. i hope i used d correct term sha

as part of my globe-trotting, i'v bin in lagos for the past 6 months now and i'v bin workin at ajose adeogun. i get there every morning thru bar-beach. the work makes a whole lot of sense and it definitely will work - only if the nigerian factor does not set in - corruption i mean.

what happened yesterday was a result, in my own little understanding of the work being done at the IMB/apese nd of bar-beach, which has cause o sort of continuous thrust of the water from that end towards the m/tel end of the bar-beach.
i dont know how to tactically explain it in engineering terms, but i'll simply sight the example of a bowl of water filled almost to capacity and yu gradually insert a bar of iron/cement at on end of the bowl, the water find its way from the disturbed end to the other end, and then it eventually overflows at the other end.

if the work aint workin, why did the water not overflow at the IMB/apese end where a phase of the work has reached almost completion!

this is only, a paraphrase of my opinion.

peace! wink

I heard the rumor yesterday, and I felt really scared because thats where  I take to and from work everyday. I just  pray something is done urgently to prevent it from happening, maybe like stopping those sand dredgers. GOD will not allow it to happen.

Hey guys and gurls, this just in, rumours that the 3rd mainland bridge has collapased are false there was no tragedy whatsoever in te state no reason to panic or feel unsafe there was no need for any police or the Government to intervene because there was only a mere accident

Journalist: But Dblock how can you say it was just a mere accident people might have got injured and what about he bridge it may not have collapsed but it is potentially unstable

Lady, Lady please I assure you there is no need to be sad or to even dream of such a scenario, I'm sure the bridge will hang on, and the accident was pobably just a bumper scratch, but even if it was a fatal accident who cares, probably some low class scums anyways, People make me laughsometimes and for people to be sending the wrong message that the government might have constructed the edifice poorlt just disgusts me, I'll tell you people the FG built this bridge with the highest intentions, the bridge was constructed by Julius Berger and was built for a total of 10,000 naira(a lot of money), we musn't joke of such things because peope's lives are at stake here, for example what if Obasanjo was been escorted in his humble Hummer H2 with diamond fittted rims and the latest in automobile technology when all of a sudden the worst happened the bridge collapased

Journalist: You've got a point there what if people died

No i meant if OBJ died, who cares about the people, oops is that on tape i mean i'm just joking of course we the government hold our humble peasants in the highest regard and we'll always think of our people when we are spending the stolen money from our Premium Swiss Acounts

Journalist: That's it i've had enough i'm out of here

Gee what a crazy lady, Hey Bob can you pass my other phone

Bob: which one the LG, or the Sagem, or the nokia, or the Sony Ericsson, or the Motorola, or the Samsung, or the Toshiba or the Alcatel or the ZTK or the antello

Hmmm i'll go with the Sagem or the Nokia,

And that's how i sent that unpatriotic journalist running

Hey all of yous this would be funy if i wasn't abroad cos now yall are gonna think i'm an ignorant duffece, but i reassure yous i'm in Naija wink

This is sad, i man really sad. Do we have to wait for a bridge to collapse finally before renovating it? Nigeria is the richest, biggest and best countey in west africa. I think our Government is finically capabable of maintaining not only bridges, but also roads, schools and other Infrastructures in the country.
Anyway i hope they won't take ages in reconstructing it.

It was just barely 10 minutes after I passed the third mainland bridge across to the Island
that my younger brother gave me a call and told me that he heard "third mainland bridge has just collasped"

I was dazed! scared! and happy (that I've passed through) at thesame time.
only for me to realize a few minutes later that it was just a rumour afterall. cheesy

Anyway on my way back to the mainland I passed through the bridge again,
but this time around my car was on 120km. grin I sensed most of my compatriots on the bridge were on 140km.
At least I was sure nobody was below 100km back to the mainland. cheesy
There were only few of us left on the bridge anyway grin

Nigeria no good, but nobody wan die grin grin grin cheesy

Ol boy, Lagosians trooped out in thousands even before 5:30 pm in order to cross the bridge when traffic wouldn't be heavy, no hold ups this morning, no one could afford to stop, straight to Adeniji grin
Re: Third Mainland Bridge May Collapse Soon? It Vibrates by TayoD(m): 1:56pm On Oct 12, 2006
Talking about the bar-beach. The last time I was there, I noticed Julius Berger was dredging sand from the bottom of the beach to be dumped at the shore. I want to believe that was a temporary measure before a real solution is put in place. But for this overflowing to have re-occured, it appears that what should have been a temporary palliative was left permanently.

The Lagos beach is one of the most active in the world. This is in the sense that the undercurrents are very fierce and turbulent. This is why the sand is easily eroded back into the sea. What needs to be done, is put up a barrier (a levee) that cannot be easily eroded by the under-current. Natural stones and boulders readily come to mind. A lot of these should be placed at the shore and spread out deep into the sea. Once this is done, we can then fill up the crevices and the top with sand to make the beach a good place for past-time and tourists-friendly.

This is an expensive proposition, but with the income potential that the beach is capable off, I should think it is the only viable alternative for the Government. Besides, lives are at stake, and we just have to do something about it.

Is anyone aware what the outcome is of the muscle-flexing between the Lagos and Federal Govevernment over who should be responsible for the Beach?

Let's imaging the kind of traffic we are going to experience in lagos,if it happens that the Govt said we should not pass through that bridge for now, probably if they want to do something about it,because the brigde is really helpful.

On NTA news yesterday (11th oct), the rumoured collapse of the third mainland bridge was one of the news item, the reporter said the rumour started from a website www.nairaland.com.

Nairaland has crossed from virtual reality to reality, aside from creating panic, Nairaland has been able to draw the attention of the government to the state of the bridge, It was reported that the government invited Julius Berger to evaluate the bridge.

NAIRALAND ROCKS!

Hello all,

I am pained that such needless rumours can be peddled in Nigeria. What do mongers stand to gain? Why would anyone want the bridge to collapse? Why creating unnecessary panic in the country? Let's get busy with changing the country rather than creating undue tension.

Let the bridge collapse - with no human casualties sha, if possible. Our government people like fire brigade approach to issues. It's only when the damage has been done that they like taking action.

Meanwhile, my people in the delta have been praying and wishing that they should have a bridge as long as that one to connect their villages with the mainlands and open business opportunities for them, but the FG and their cronies will never allow that to see the light of the day.

I think the best thing to happen to that bridge is for it to develop some crack so the government can seriously access it and do repair where and when necessary.

As we're all saying this, one day, that bridge will surely collapse, I juts hope it will be in the middle of the night so there'll be less or no casualty.

Baba federal Govt, i hope say una dey listen very well ooo
