Capital as such is not evil; it is its wrong use that is evil. Capital in some form or other will always be needed.

Going! Going!! Gone!!! Mobile Device market share

In the erratic world of mobile communication device, the unthinkable becomes the thinkable and then there are no late arrivals. The last 10 years have witnessed a lot of changes and this has got the industry watchers and pundit wondering. It is said that early birds take the best worms but here it is the smartest bird takes the best worms.
Market share is vital not necessary profits if an organization wants to be viable in a mobile market. The mobile market is platform market. In platform markets, third-party companies build products and services on top of other companies' platforms. As they do, the underlying platforms become more valuable and have greater customer lock-in. This is one singular concept that most erstwhile mobile phone makers like Motorola, Siemens, Ericsson , Alcatel and so many others refused to see. In a bid to recover the global market share Motorola. The company announced "structural and strategic realignment" to revive the fortunes of its handset division. "The company's alternatives may include the separation of mobile devices from its other businesses in order to permit each business to grow and better serve its customers," the company said.
Courtship is a social thing and it can be seen in the union of Sony and Ericsson that gave birth to SonyEriccson, there used to be Alcatel and Lucent Technologies that also gave birth to Alcatel -Lucent of lately we are looking at the wonderful courtship of Microsoft and Nokia. Some of these courtship and marriage ended well some in a disaster.
The Scandinavian gave us the early birds. They gave us the Nokia and Ericsson; the brides were pretty blondes that were courted all the way from Asia to United States. As beautiful women they were sought after for their charm and so did they fell or assumed to fell for the admirers. Ericsson was the first lady to fall for the charms of Sony a huge electronic giant all the way from Japan. The result of the merger gave the world wonderful devices like the Experia and Walkman. A phone that comes incorporated with pedometers. That I can personally attest to for health conscious customers like me. A phone calculates your step and tells you how many calories burnt. That’s a novel idea. But that isn’t enough from erasing Ericsson phones from the dog eat dog mobile market. Sony Ericsson is failing to compete against Apple and Samsung, both engaged currently in a bitter patent dispute and strong rivalry. Today Ericsson Mobile Platform is no more! In a $1.5 billion in cash for its 50 percent share of the joint venture.
Nokia, Scandinavian damsel that we thought will stand the advances of admirers, but lo and behold found love in Microsoft an American firm. We watched in dismay as the hobnobbing went but alas, we never knew that as true for Americans. Microsoft came, saw and conquered Nokia. Enticed her with his Operating System then finally took her. Nokia came and stole our hearts with low end phones like 3310, introduced first phones with radio and possibly a camera. Where Nokia did get it wrong? Nokia refused to see the dynamics of the market. The market wasn’t a PC or Laptop led one. The market was an innovative and Tablet/Phablet led market embedded with great apps. Till this day we haven’t seen a Nokia Tablet.
Bobbie Johnson an ICT Analyst argued in his piece that just combining two companies with flawed strategies does not necessarily mean that each will shore up the other's weaknesses. The app gap is often cited as a prime reason for Nokia woes currently, iOS has almost 350,000 active apps available to consumers through the App Store. Windows Phone 7 has about 8,000 apps. Even with a growth rate of 125 apps each day, Apple's advantage at this point may be insurmountable. Each Apple iOS device averages more than 60 downloaded apps, and the App Store remains the top destination by a huge margin in time spent browsing app marketplaces by consumers. Many phones have taken these windows operating system path but it leads to perdition. Nokia should have taken a cue from HTC, Sprint, Motorola and HP Mobile phone. What do these mobile device makers had in common? Windows Mobile operating system and loss of market share. Though HTC reviewing their Microsoft relationship. Others their position can’t be fathomed now. Motorola being a Google owned phone has gone back to the parent company.
Motorola, which was assumed made the first mobile phone call in 1973, and at that time appeared to be sitting on top of the world. The Chicago-based company had produced the trend-setting, super-thin Razr. At a point it was one of the five most desired handset. Fast forward to 2013 Motorola was apologizing to investors for declining phone sales that worsened through the year. By the fourth quarter, its global market share had roughly halved to 12 percent, from 23 percent a year ago.
Per Aspemar, head of strategy for No. 4 handset maker of then Sony Ericsson, saw Motorola's difficulties as a reflection of the fierce competition in the global phone industry, which has players from China to Finland jostling for market share. He said "It's a reminder to everyone how fast-moving the industry is and how important it is to have a strong product portfolio," he said.
RIM (Research In Motion) a Canadian firm that is owner of Blackberry now seems to be in limbo. In the midst of dwindling revenue base and shrinking profit, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins announced some days back that the company intends to shed 4,500 of its staff in a bid to cut costs and channel resources into areas that are likely to rescue the company from the throes of a takeover or a fold up. It is a figure that represents nearly half of its global workforce and it is coming barely months after another wholesale layoff in which the company parted ways with a lot of workers.
As if that is not enough epitaphs for RIM, the only strand they held to as a sinking company is trying to be cut off. The Blackberry Messenger which used to be the flagship was available on IOS and android operated devices from September 21 2013. In less that 48 hours about 1.2 million downloads of the application was downloaded. Even before the free BBM app, whtasapp a free messenger for all phone types gave Blackberry messenger shivers and fevers.
Blackberry Messenger was once upon a time Blackberry’s numero UNO feature. Years ago, if you didn’t have a BBM pin, you were either not buoyant enough to get yourself a Blackberry and rub shoulders with the business elite or you were left to admire those that has PIN or jealous them! The issue was that RIM produced phones that were just flat, same features; most of the models look alike and no distinguishable item on all their phones. There weren’t any variety (which is the spice of life) in their phone types. That seems to be their greatest undoing.
They came they saw and now they seem to have been conquered, the likes of Techno, LG, Samsung, HTC, renewed Motorola, Sony and lately Itel(especially their Heron which I bought for my wife lately as as a birthday present)
