Nigerian security agents allegedly killed eight innocent civilians yesterday in a purported raid against an uncompleted building said to be occupied by Book Haram members.

SaharaReporters can authoritatively confirm that the eight persons shot and killed by Nigerian
security agents in Abuja today were in no way linked to the dreaded Boko Haram sect as claimed by
the spokesperson of the Nigerian secret police, Marilyn Ogar.
The scene of the massacre was an uncompleted building at Bamanga Tukur Street in the Apo
Legislative Quarters.
Seventeen of those who survived the pre-dawn onslaught by uniformed men of the Joint Task Force
(JTF) spoke to us on their hospital beds in Abuja, all of them vehemently denying being members of
Boko Haram.
One of the survivors said they are day labourers who work in the city to make ends meet, and later
squat in uncompleted buildings by paying the guards attached to those buildings. This morning, he
said, they were woken up by a surprising hail of bullets from the uniformed soldiers.
Providing some background, he disclosed that an emissary of an army general had given them a five-
day quit notice but that today’s slaughter was carried out before they could move from the building.
SaharaReporters saw sleeping mats and cooking utensils belonging to the squatters as well as blood
splattered on the walls of the building from the unusual attack on innocent civilians by the Nigerian
military claiming to be fighting Boko Haram.
Nigerian security agents insist that they killed the civilians after they first came under attack while
trying to dig out weapons hidden underground by the insurgents, but one of the injured squatters told
SaharaReporters categorically that the soldiers fled the scene after finding out they had killed
innocent civilians.
“It was after the attack that some policemen and the SSS came to the scene and even tried to help
those of us that survived to get to hospital,” he said

The Nigerian government has often been accused of killing innocent people in its purported fight against Boko Haram extremists. Killing innocents increases anti-government sentiment and makes it easier for Boko Haram to recruit members.

There may have been collateral damage but SR is in no position to determine who is a member of Boko Haram and who is not.

It was a tragedy per say, but how can one determine the through motive of the entire people living there.malam useni was our gateman in enugu,my dad built shop for him, encouraged him with150k and he started selling things.before we could say jack, our house has a mini mosque(plastered floor and a canopy tree to Protect them from the sun).they started pouring in,blocking our street on friday's.my dad knew useni, but what about the others, they mingle easily and can turn agrressive anytime.diplomatically the mosque was taking out and over 120 of them already residing in my compound was dispersed.they stabbed my neigbours son, whom was a cultist, but I don't think the person that did d stabbing lived to tell the story.SMH

Sincere 9gerian: There may have been collateral damage but SR is in no position to determine who is a member of Boko Haram and who is not.

He who alleges must prove. If the authorities were sure enough to gun these people down, they should be able to show us the evidence that convinced them. You can't be expecting corpses or their grieving families to start defending themselves after you've already shot them. The principle is "innocent until proven guilty". Since the authorities haven't shown any evidence that they were BH members, or found any weapons or bomb making materials, then they are innocent.

Otherwise, they could just shoot anybody including you and claim afterwards that nobody can prove that you weren't Boko Haram.
