How Did Certain Names Become Stereotypically Black? by ektbear: 7:22am On Sep 22, 2013
I've never met a white Dion, Tyrone, Latesha, Shaquisha, etc before in my life.

So in the UK evidently the name "Winston" is also a black name...there is supposed to be some historical reason for why this is.

So what is the story behind this?

Certain names appear to be distinctly black tho. Lateesha, Nashawn etc. Most of them are modifications or variations of traditional European names. Probably, Diaspora Blacks felt they needed a distinct identity and they took to creating unique versions of typical white names.

Some other such names used by Diaspra blacks are clearly Muslim or indigenous African in origin.

Shawn is most likely a derivative of the irish name.

Yea, Shawn is from Sean. Nashawn however (as a variation of Shawn) appears to be unique to African-Americans.

Those Lateesha and Shareefa names used by African Americans sound like Muslims names. Is it their own version of Muslims names? Are they Muslims?
