A muslim cleric actualy made a comment on the recent kenyan siege, making it clear that the quran stated that muslims should not have pity on non muslims in matters like this, and that is why the al shababs had to retaliate. How tru?and why then is islam called a religion of peace?

Allah says of Muhammad [SA] that he is a messenger and warner to all the world [nations, peoples, etc, etc]. A messenger by nature delivers the truth. Truth is mercy if you are on it already, your feet are wanting to be more firm on it. if you are not on it, it is an indicator that you should turn to the truth. this is mercy, also.

the 'islamic scholar' you refer to makes his own opinion. if he is correct, his statement will not be different from what i said above which in essence forbids senseless killing. and definitely the kenya disaster is that because there is no mercy and none of those killed did anything wrong to their killers, meeting by fate, a terrible fate at the mall.

the opinion of the scholar is not binding because he is not God or the Messenger [SA] of God. the messenger [SA] said to a group of muslims who were under another as leader chosen to lead them on an errant. before they [RA] returned the leader told them to gather woods and when piled together, he kindled a raging fire by it.

he then told them that he is their leader by the authority given him by the messenger [sa], now commanding them to jump into the fire.

everyone of them refused and when they returned, they recounted the event and their decision to the prophet [SA] who told them that they have done well, using their mind against evil [jumping into the fire, because only God can punish with fire and man knows jumping into fire is disaster]. and if they have been foolish and jump into the fire because their leader was extending his authority as if he was the messenger which obviously he was not, they would have remained in the fire time the Day of Judgment!

Islam required man to use his full capability, which includes thinking and don't be instinctive in everything, especially matters that is not worship [even that you have to know that God exist before you decide to acknowledge Him by obeying His commands, which includes worshiping Him correctly].

there are matters that may arise in your life and you do not see the answer in either the Quran and or Hadith because of your lack of knowledge. But you have a mind and a brain to interpret your thoughts and get the best answer which is hidden in layers in the Quran and or hadith. such was the ability of 'thinking' that the one chosen to be the governor of Yemen by the messenger [sa] that the messenger [sa] thank God for blessing Islam with muslims who can think.

Judge for yourself:

"Narrated As-Sab bin Jaththama: The Prophet passed by me at a place called Al-Abwa or Waddan, and was asked whether it was permissible to attack the pagan warriors at night with the probability of exposing their women and children to danger. The Prophet replied, "They (i.e. women and children) are from them (i.e. pagans)."
--Sahih Bukhari 4:52:256

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. "

Hi Funme,

A lot of persons (including some Muslims) have a number of misconceptions about the Quran, especially as it relates to the ish with violence. I can tell you for free that the Quran in no way encourages the use of 'violence' on innocent persons.

@onetrack: the issue of at way is different from the issue of not being at way. the case of kenya in my mind is not at way with al shabab which is not an army representing a nation.

we have to give it to Muhammad [SA] that when the was going to fight the people already fighting him, he shifted the battle to time battle is permissible. you see the wisdom of this is superior to killing everyone as it used to be done before his time or the immediate of your enemy with what you have on you, so much so that if it it his ear that you sword can cut off, do it because where you are is battlefield already.

there is rule of engaging in war in Islam, which is why you read or hear the majority of muslims denouncing any and all evil process hew upon human kind by those who fraudulently use Islam as their base. read the hadith, again and maybe you will also think while you are reading it to get greater understanding better than when you penned it, earlier.

Allah (S.W.T.) also honored this Ummah when He made it the best Ummah to rise to perform this obligation. Allah (S.W.T) said in surat Al-Imran, what can be translated as, "You (Muslims) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind, you enjoining what is good (Al-Ma'roof) and forbidding what is evil (Al-Munkar), and you believe in Allah… Quran 3 vs 110 .

Each relationship with Non-Muslims, whether they are on the personal or state level, should be to achieve this goal. Islam orders us to strengthen this relationship with Non-Muslims and to eliminate anything that will weaken or make it harder to achieve this goal.

The life of the prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and the lives of his companions are full of great examples that promote good relationships with Non-Muslims. Islamic history is full of evidence that shows that Muslims have maintained good relations with Non-Muslims for many centuries. Because these Muslims dealt with others in good manners, they were able to conquer nations and lands. Muslims did not overcome these nations with the strength of weapons and large armies. Some lands were conquered without a single soldier—in fact, they were conquered by Muslim merchants who carried goods and good manners.

These manners opened the minds and hearts of the people who came into Islam by the masses. Because of the good manners of these merchants, today we witness the largest Muslim populations in Indonesia and Malaysia.

peace, tolerance, compassion, and good relationships are the normal, and original state between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Islam promotes and protects this good relationship. Animosity and war are exceptions to this original state, when these exceptions do not exist, then we should return to the original peaceful state.

Allah (S.W.T) said in surat Al-Mumtahinah, what can be translated as, "Allah does not forbid you (Muslims) to deal justly and kindly with those who have not fought against you in accounts of your religion and who do not drive you out from your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.” Qoran 60 vs 8

This great verse clearly states the normal and original state for a good relationship between Muslims and Non-Muslims. Allah (S.W.T.) did not prevent us (Muslims) from establishing good relationships with Non-Muslims.

He clearly says that our relationships with Non-Muslims should be based on the best morals and justice with those who declared peace upon us and did not fight us.
