September 26 is World Maritime Day. The theme of this year’s commemoration is ‘Sustaining Development: IMO’s contribution beyond Rio+20′.
Shipping transports over 90% of exports and imports worldwide. For international trade, It remains the most secure, cost effective, easy and smooth mode of conveying cargoes.
A United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, popularly called Rio+20 took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2012. This forms the main reason for the theme, as it is designed to gear the International Maritime Organisation to fully implement the commitment made at the conference.
The International Maritime Organisation, formerly, The Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization until 1982, is a specialised agency established by the United Nations to ensure the safety, the security of shipping and to forestall marine pollution by ships.
