Catering Business-starting New. by Oleros: 9:15am On Sep 29, 2013
I resigned from a private firm June this year due to sexual harrassment from the business owner, who also was my boss.In the course of applying for jobs,I enrolled in a catering school, specialising in pastries, cake baking and decoration. I am enjoying every bit of this vocation.Thinking of having my own shop after graduation, but this fear of unknown keeps troubling me. Savings I made while working can still get basic instruments for this business and also pay for one year rent of a shop. Please note that I am like an orphan, struggling to succed. No financial help from any one. Has anyone experienced this fear while trying to start up a business? How was this fear conquered?

Your going to catering school is good, it will expose you to a lot of opportunities, if you know how to handle it, its all success, but let me remind you that all business owners are not like your former boss, you need to work for someone after your graduation that will expose you to other pratical aspect of catering, from there you can plan how to start your own business by saving towards achieving your own business. Goodluck

Fear of the unknown is a very present factor most entrepreneurs have to face. Sometimes it is the determinant between remaining stagnant or moving forward. You have done well to have gone to acquire additional skills. As the other contributor has posited, perhaps you need additional resources that will help you launch the business on a sound footing. These you can get by further study - not necessarily by going through another course but by self study and analysing current trends.
Are there others in the business you intend to pursue? Study them. Why are they doing well? Why are they struggling?
Is it the range of products?
Is it their location?
Is the shop welcoming enough?
Do you really need a shop or are you thinking of introducing a new sales strategy?
Most banks / insurance firms have Monday management meetings. Perhaps you want to introduce cup cakes to them which they can have at the end of the meetings.
Open yourself to a lot of good influence. Read wide. I am sure thete are success stories in your field on Google. Do all that is necessary. I am sure you will know when you are ready.

Wow. I admire your courage in leaving an unsavoury working environment to start on your own, and also your initiative in enrolling yourself in catering courses. I think this fear of the unknown is normal, you will always doubt yourself especially as you have limited in the area. Someone I spoke to a while ago said she couldn't even give out her business cards at an event because she felt like a fraud.

I think you've just got to fake the confidence until you make it. Lots of people feel like this - you are not a alone. And it's usually women who have a harder time conquering this fear I'll recommend reading Lean in by Sheryl Sandberg, one of Facebook's CEOs who had this fear, and wrote about how it limited her, and how she conquered it. All the best.

What you have delved into is nice. However like stated earlier you need to attach yourself to someone already in the business. In the world of business the starting point is always rough and if you dont have patience and passion you may give up. Attending the training or school isnt enough, you need to actually become pratical...practice in a live business environment.

There is something called "operations" in business. At the beginning if you dont know how to operate, you may fail and it usually takes longer time with patience for a new business to stand. For example, you should learn how to bill your clients, source for clients, source for additional income in your business to keep it going until the big jobs comes, also learn how to give discounts that wont affect you, learn how to manage overhead costs, learn how to do promotions. Trust me, the only place you can learn all these is in a live business environment. They wont teach you all that in the training program or school.

So, best advice is look for a similar business environment and attach yourself or you can call it industrial attachment (lol). Then you learn how to run a business before you finally kick start your own. Meanwhile, you can be doing personal business on the side...then when you have good customer base and sure of constant referrals, then you can officially rent your own shop. Dont rush.

In my 3 years career as a web developer, i have been operating from home and with a team. Now i practically do business on referrals and i have consistent customer base so i have began setting up my personal office where i will employ staff. Its a process, you dont just rush into business. Learn the craft, learn the operations and the lunch your brand. cool
