How Old Is Nigeria? 99 Or 53? by Samgreguc(m): 3:15am On Oct 01, 2013
On the 1st of January 1914, the Northern and southern protectorates were amalgamated(merged) and was named Nigeria.
And on the 1st of Oct., 1960 the Nigeria became an independent Nigeria.
Logically, how old is Nigeria 99 going by 1914 dating or 53 going by 1960 dating?

99.

October 1 is just "Independence day" (whatever that means).

53. Date of creation isn't usually celebrated. Independence Day is what's usually celebrated by all countries. Moreover, the Nigeria of 1914 is quite different of the Nigeria of 1960 which is still somewhat exists now since the Southern Cameroons broke away.

Amalgamation is like the day the sp.erm hit the ov.um, while independence day is the day of delivery.
.
Going by that logic, then Nigeria is 53.

Nah, amalgamation is like the day u were born. Independence is like the day u told ur parents to let u be a man and handle ur own business.

I think the sperm hit the ovum in 1885 when Britain declared the "Niger Territories" as part of her empire. (Even though that declaration existed larger on paper only...at that point.) grin

No doubt, Nigeria is 99. It was in 1914, that Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba and other tribes were forcefully joined in an unholy matrimony called amalgamation by some greedy British slave masters, who were going about the world, looking for people to govern. Then, one Flora Shaw (the girl friend of Sir, Fredrick Lugard, the then Governor General of the almagamated protectorates), chose the name: NIGERIA (coined from the phrase: NIGER AREA) because we live on the bank of River Niger. So, like a former slave, Nigeria gained her freedom (Independence) in 1960 (53 years ago). But that does not mean that a former slave's birthday is the day he gained freedom because he has been existing before his freedom. Nigeria was born 1914 (99 years ago) but gained freedom or became an adult in 1960 (53 years ago). Nigeria therefore, is 99 years old. It may be right to celebrate our 53rd Independence Anniversary today, but it is wrong to call it our birthday.

As it is now it seems the Independent(Matured) Nigeria is 53 and the Nigeria(dependent + independent) is 99

Not so. Nigeria is 53 not 99 or whatever. The pre-independent enclave was not a nation by any means.

Nigeria is 99. Nigeria of 1914 as it is today, is not a nation. We can say a nation-state, but not a nation. Talking about southern Cameroon, Bakassi was just ceded to Cameroon, so we cannot say that the country is given birth to the day our territory is cast, otherwise, we will be about one year old, not 53 (Nigeria having fully ceded Bakassi to Cameroon in 2012).

The pre-independent enclave was a nation-state, with a clearly defined terriroty and identity. What happened in 1960 was like the date a slave gained his freedom, not the day he got an identity as a human beign. Probably the date he got an independent identity.

It is a country that gets independence from colonial masters. A country is not born after it has gotten independent, otherwise, you can't consider it a colony. You cannot free nothing, you free a country.
