NUT: Involve Shagari, Obasanjo, Shonekan, Others In Resolution Of ASUU Crisis by donphilopus: 11:56am On Oct 03, 2013
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to involve past leaders in the resolution of the lingering face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

National President of Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Michael Alogba Olukoya, gave this advice in Abuja, on Wednesday, at parley with the Supervising Minister of Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike and Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu.

The meeting called at the instance of Wike, was to brief the NUT leadership on the efforts made by the government toward resolution of the ASUU strike and to appeal to the teachers not to embark on the proposed solidarity strike.

Olukoya, who said the teachers were concerned with the state of education in Nigeria, especially the ASUU strike that has lasted for over three months without hope for resolution.

NUT President, after listening to the brief by the Supervising Minister of Education, said there was the need to involve the past leaders and powerful voices in the country in the resolution of the logjam.

He urged President Jonathan to call all the past leaders, including Alhaji Shehu Shagari, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd), Abdulsalami Abubakar among others to a roundtable in order to resolve the crisis.

According to him, the Union was worried by the poor quality of the product of the system, especially the half-baked graduates churn out annually from the nation’s university system.

On the proposed solidarity strike, Olukoya said: “we have listened to the appeal of the two ministers and we will go back to brief our principals.”

Olukoya also urged the Federal Government to relax the conditions for accessing the intervention fund from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).
Earlier, Wike, in his brief, apologised to the leadership of NUT over comments credited to him that NUT had no business in the ongoing ASUU strike.

He explained that the Federal Government was still in talks with the ASUU leadership, expressing hope that the strike would soon be called off.
