How Obasanjo Received News Of Rumoured Death Of Son, Gbenga, In Lagos Plane Cras by Shegman22(m): 9:55pm On Oct 03, 2013
Gbenga Obasanjo was rumoured to have died in the crash.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was at a programme at the Obasanjo Presidential Library when the news, which turned out false, first broke that his first son, Gbenga, was in the plane that crashed in Lagos, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
An Associated Airline plane carrying 20 passengers and crew, as well as the corpse of former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Agagu, crashed, minutes after take-off at the Lagos airport.
The social media was agog with reports that Gbenga Obasanjo was among the passengers in the plane conveying close family and friends to the burial of Mr. Agagu in Ondo. The rumour was that Gbenga was among the 13 that died in the crash.
The former president was briefed about the crash towards the end of the programme, and he immediately left the venue in the company of one of his close associates.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Mr. Obasanjo received the news during a photo session with school pupils who had come for a leadership training programme for young leaders held at the Presidential Library. He received so many calls during the session, while the expression on his face indicated that something was amiss, a witness said.
Mr. Obasanjo, during a telephone conversation with one of the callers, was heard asking which Gbenga was involved in the crash. He then told the caller that his son was not in Lagos but Abuja.
Later on Thursday, when PREMIUM TIMES visited the Hilltop mansion of the former president in Abeokuta, security operatives at the entrance were seen playing games; an indication that no member of the family was being mourned.
Just as Mr. Obasanjo was assuring callers that his son, Gbenga, was not involved in the accident, several residents of Abeokuta were apprehensive with some expressing sadness at the crash particularly about Gbenga’s rumoured involvement.
There was relief in the tensed city when it became clear that Gbenga was not on the plane.
Mr. Agagu’s family have stated that the late governor’s burial would continue on Friday as scheduled despite the crash. http://www.google.com/url?q=http://premiumtimesng.com/news/146004-obasanjo-received-news-rumoured-death-son-gbenga-lagos-plane-crash.html&sa=U&ei=pNlNUqLSLc7v0gXd74HgBw&ved=0CBAQqQIwAQ&usg=AFQjCNEXtOZRItE6xoI9brfTUUST1kTo5w
