An estimated 700,000 passengers are projected to ride the Abuja light rail (ALR) daily when the first phase of the project takes off in 2015. FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed stated this on Tuesday during the flag-off of construction works on the 12 rail stations located along the first phase of the ALR project. He performed the flag-off ceremony jointly with the Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi and the FCT Minister of State, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide. The ground-breaking took place at site of the National Park Rail Station, Wuye District, Abuja.

The 12 railway stations under construction cover lots 1A and 3 which make up the first phase of the ALR project. The projects are scheduled to be completed within the first quarter of 2015.

Giving a breakdown of the 12 rail stations, Senator Bala Mohammed said that Lot 1A has four stations while Lot 3 has eight. The four stations along Lot 1A are Gwagwa Station, Deidei Station, Jibi Station and Gwazango Station while the eight stations along Lot 3 are Abuja Metro Station, National Stadium Station, National Park Station, Ring Road II Station, Wupa Station, Idu Transfer Station, Airport East Station and Airport Main Station.

Senator Bala Mohammed said the 12 stations would provide shopping precincts, cultural and entertainment centres to boost tourism. According to him, “The rail stations are places of high economic activities, boarding or alighting, rail transit management and operations, commercial and tourism activities.”

The Minister added that the locations of the stations were strategically designed to connect the FCT transportation network to districts and area councils. He said the remaining five lots, namely 1B, 2,4,5 and 6 are available for concession on design, build, operate and transfer basis.

Senator Smart Adeyemi in his speech said he was delighted at the huge progress recorded in the implementation of the rail project by the Bala Mohammed Administration principally because the project touches on critical needs of the ordinary people...

FCTA Secretary of Transportation, Engr. Jonathan Achara Ivoke, in his welcome address said the Abuja Main Rail Station is located at the Central Business District (CBD) which also hosts the Abuja Metro and the National Railway Stations. According to him, it is the General Transfer Station where passengers would be transiting from the Abuja Metro Station to the National Line.

Damn, but this country has money sha!! I just did a rough calculation of the number of train stations being built across the nation as we speak, including Lagos, Abuja, PH, national rail etc, and it came up to something like 37! Very few countries on earth can afford to build 37 train stations at the same time. And you know these modern train stations are like mini international airports. Highly advanced edifices.

He is already fighting corruption which is why we have all these projects being commissioned and initiated. If corruption was as it was in the past, all this stuff will be on paper. But today you can visit the project sites and see the work ongoing 24/7!

Is that supposed to be a joke? What are you doing in that little corner of yours to fight corruption? What had been neglected over the years due to corruption from past administrations is now up and working and you are still asking him to 'fight corruption'? So what was he doing to revamp that sector? Kissing corruption? Are you a psychopathic boxer? undecided

Abuja Rail Project Still at 27%, Five Years After
24 Jul 2013

By Senator Iroegbu Adedayo Akinwale

Minister certain of project completion by 2015

By Senator Iroegbu Adedayo Akinwale

The 'Abuja Mono Rail Project' of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT) has now managed to progress to 27 per cent completion, five years after the commencement of work.

THISDAY gathered that the snail pace of the project, which started in 2007 might not be unconnected with the financial constraints the federal government is undergoing even though the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had facilitated a $500 million soft loan from the Chinese Exim Bank last that had since breathed a new life to the near moribund project.

The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, while speaking yesterday at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit Station, promised that with the available fund, the completion and subsequent operation of the project would be accelerated.
Mohammed said the project would mark a positive turning point in the transport fortunes in the FCT, in addition to a cheaper, comfortable and safer transportation.

"The project would also ushered in an era of environmentally-friendly transport system and sustainable development," he said.
The minister noted that the rail project when completed, would generate about 20,000 strong work force from the present 3,500 currently employed.

He said: "The 2010 demand study for this railway shows daily ridership of about 470,000 passengers per day. With the current growth rate in the FCT, it would not be exaggerating to put the 2015 projected ridership at well over 700,000 passengers per day.
"The stations would provide shopping precincts, cultural and entertainment centres to boost tourism."

In his remarks, the Chairman, Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi, said there was no doubt that the project would enhance the economy and also improve small scale businesses in the nation's capital.

Adeyemi commended FCTA and federal government under President Goodluck Jonathan for the project and their doggedness, despite the unprecedented security challenges in country.
He noted that about N900 billion spent on security alone last year could have been enough to upgrade all the federal roads in the country.

According to him, the government at all level were doing what they could to better the lots of the people, "even though it might not have met the expectations of the people due to the turbulents period the country is, which is gradually getting over.

"It might not be able to meet the actual expectation of Nigerians but we must take into consideration the turbulences that this administration has passed through, more than any other government...challenges towards good governance than this government headed by President Goodluck Jonathan."

"We are however happy to know that we are gradually above the turbulences, the challenges is the insecurity," he added.

"Last year alone, we expended N935 billion on security. It is enough to dualise all Nigeria highways, it is enough to create job," he noted.

Also, the Secretary, Transport Secretariat, FCT, said with the support of the federal government the 2015 target for the completion of the project was realisable.

enough said - with photos that may go back as far as 2012 and a government that is all empty barel with the likes of rossik and sincere nigerians - and is broke to boot i wouldn't give this tripe any consideration

http://www.nanngronline.com/section/general/fct-minister-says-rail-project-will-speed-up-development-in-abuja

Abuja, July 23, 2013 (NAN) The FCT Minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed, says Abuja Rail Project will speed up FCT Administration’s vision of making Abuja among the top 20 capital cities in the world.

Mohammed made this known at the ground breaking ceremony of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit Stations on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that the project would bolster economic development and would mark a positive turning-point in the transport fortunes of the FCT.

According to him, the project will herald the onset of cheaper, comfortable and safer transportation in the FCT; it will reduce travel time and vehicular pollution.

He said that the project that commenced in 2007 had witnessed setbacks due to financial constraints.

According to him, Mr President facilitated the procurement of 500 million dollars soft loan from the Chinese Exim Bank which breathed a new life into the project.

``FCTA is meeting its financial obligations to the contractors of this project and it is running steadily, we are optimistic that the deadline of 2015 for the project is attainable,’’ he said.

He said that the network concept of the project was made up of six lots covering a total distance of about 300km.

``The feasibility study and conceptual design for three of these lots 1, 2 and 3, have been completed.

``Lot 1A and 3, which make up this first phase, are programmed to be completed in 2015. The feasibility study and conceptual design for the remaining lots is under procurement.’’

In her vote of thanks, the FCT Minister of State, Ms Olajumoke Akinjide, commended the FCT minister for his dogged pursuit of the project.

Akinjide said that the life of the project was an eloquent tribute also to both the executive and the legislature.

She also commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) handling the project for demonstrating confidence in investing in Nigeria.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Secretary of Transport Secretariat, Mr Jonathan Ivoke, said that the light rail stations had so far recorded 27 per cent completion.

Ivoke said that the rail stations were places of high economic activities; boarding or alighting, rail transit management and operations, commercial and tourism activities, among others.

According to him, the Abuja main railway station is located at the Central Business District, adding that this location hosts the Abuja Metro Station and National Railway Station.

He said that two stations had been designed for the airport to ease movement of commuters from Abuja International Airport and the local wing. (NAN)

The feasibility study and conceptual design for three of these lots 1, 2 and 3, have been completed.

detail design, reviews, construction documentation, tender process, contract award, mobilization and some jokers tell us this will be completed in two years

the minster is even contradicting himself -

`Lot 1A and 3, which make up this first phase, are programmed to be completed in 2015. The feasibility study and conceptual design for the remaining lots is under procurement.’’

going by this, only the 'first phase' will be completed in 2015. if a feasibility study and conceptual design is 'under procurement' then y'all on a very long thing. that means they are still shopping for consultants for feasibility studies and conceptual designs - they haven't engaged them yet.

You keep showing that your hatred has made you completely ignorant and real dolt!

Read the topic again slowly! It says "construction starts on 12 trains stations", not on rail tracks. The rail track pictures is just to show that that work is already on going. But you seem too daft to understand! Train stations dont need up to two years to be built. They can be completed in 1 year or a little over 1 year. You are trying so hard to be intelligent but you always keep coming on short. The topic says works starts on train stations so obviously, there are no serious pictures yet to post for the train station, so he posted the prototype. You call it lies but Lagos to Kano is already on. PH to Maiduguri will start december. Also Enugu to PH to Kaduna will also start. No one needs your opinion. You can keep on posting your hatred, it will not change anything. At the respective dates, each one will be launched and you will keep looking like the dolt you are. Maybe you will go to the trains and stations and annouce to the passengers inside that it is a lie and that the FG is fooling them as the trains they are sitting in does not exist in reality, only on paper!
