Those of us who loved and cheerished Anambra State had looked with disappointment over the inability of the this administration to see the prospects of Anambra State becoming a place where the whole of Africa come to see and buy ingenuity of the Igbo race. While growing up, my father told me the story of how creative Anambra people were, with particular reference to the decades preceding the civil war, the war period, and immediately after the war. From metal works, wood works, leather and shoe making, and other areas of manufacturing with little inputs from the expartriates to buying and selling of all kinds of wares imported from Europe, America, and other overseas countries that matter. Africa as far as Gabon, Senegal, Cameroon, North came to Anambra to buy and learn skills and crafts. It is not uncommon to see young lads from these Francophone countries learning one craft or the other. I was told of how some men even without formal education could come together and own businesses employing their kinsmen in the process. Beggars and Begging profession were not common because there is something to do for everybody. Port-harcourt, Lagos, Kano, cotonou, lome, all over you find our people doing something meaningful. Together with our brothers from Ohafia, Afikpo, etc Aba, Onitsha, was filled with A and Sons ltd, X merchandise, Y trading company,Q industries, Z transport limited, it was all stories of a determined people.
Educated citizens were not left out, they excelled in Arts, Engineering, Medicals, History and literature. In fact, the first indigenous head of a higher institution in Nigeria was from Anambra State. Schools sports were active right from primary and secondary school, the likes of Mary Onyali started from secondary school in Enugu, the capital of then Anambra State.
Our trained Engineers emphasized practical learning, creativity and enterprise these were exemplified during the civil war when they went ahead to design all kinds of machines, I was told of how some of the European nations withdrew their support during the civil war on seeing the creative spirit of our people, they were quoted as Saying that Japan was a mistake and that they will not allow another Japan( Igbo) to rise up. Worthy of Mention here were the weapon designs done by Engr Ojukwu (UK trained with expertise in most fields of engineering, who was gunned down by the Nigerian army with the support of Britain) and his team.
As the Election draws very near, we need a leader with such vision someone who will value our history and uphold the dreams of our Fathers, who laid the foundation for our enterprise, who valued the importance of practical education. A number of them were Catechists, traders, but they contributed money sacrificially to build schools, technical centres and even sent some of our sons to European countries to study.
We need a leader who will create industrial zones, support them financially through creation of necessary infrastructure, independent power for those zones, we need airports, universities (not just one) that are technically oriented.
We need a government that will value overseas scholarships for deserving under-graduate and post-graduate students. A government that will partner with industrialized nation to turn Anambra to an industrial hurb even if loans are involved or we paying them in kind through other means.
We need a Leader who will build world class Universities, health centre, stadia and sports complex, farm settlements, airports and trade zones, a leader who will support and encourage each Local government to produce something that can be exported, thereby creating jobs. A leader who will value the importance of a vibrant local government administration.
The amount of money that came into Anambra in the past 8 years could do these things if the vision was there.
We need do not need another Peter Obi, who has shown lack of vision except for the establishments where he has personal interest. His pattern of spending over the past years leaves much to be desired. His ideas of development is very faulty. The infra-structural drive in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and indeed most communities are mostly private and individual efforts.
Who can make this Japan dream come true.
I was thinkiing of Soludo who has good knowledge of developmental economics, but he has been schemed-out by Obi.
Ngige, Ubah, Peter Obi's Obiano, Ukachukwu?
