Police in Ogun State said at the weekend that 779 suspected armed robbers, cultists and kidnappers had been arrested in the last four months.

The police also recovered about 98 arms, 976 ammunition as well as 94 vehicles stolen from the state and other neighbouring states from June till date.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this to journalists after returning from an operation where a patrol team intercepted four suspected pipeline vandals at Omu-Ijebu in Odogbolu Local Government Area.

The PPRO explained that the total value of property recovered from suspected criminals between June and September was N44,817,800.
Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, also gave names of the suspected petroleum pipeline vandals as Omololu Oseyemi, Ogunsola Adekunle, Adewale Eyienle and Lekan Emiloju.

The police image maker said items recovered from the suspected vandals included a Volkswagen Golf car marked Lagos KTU 49 BE, a pumping machine, sledge hammer, drilling machines, long hose being used to siphon the product, hand gloves, cutlass and shovels.

He said: “The suspects were intercepted ostensibly on their way to carry out vandalism operation. We are not going to leave any stone unturned in checking crimes and criminalities in the state.”

Adejobi added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikhemefuna Okoye, had ordered the suspected vandals to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, adding that they should be charged to court after the investigation had been completed.

A breakdown of the achievements of the command between June and September shows that 106 armed robbery suspects were arrested while 32 suspected bandits were killed.
The PPRO said 17 rape suspects and 39 cult members were nabbed while three people were arrested for alleged kidnapping during the period under review.

He said 206 suspects were charged to court out of which 189 suspects were prosecuted with the conviction of 24 criminals.
Adejobi appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and other security agencies in the state by volunteering necessary information to check criminals.

He said: “The police command and other security agencies cannot handle the task of security alone. We need the support and cooperation of the people in tracking and unmasking criminal elements in the society.”
