One of the common ailments we often experience is headache. Though many people see it as a usual thing in human life, this article highlights certain things that often cause it, but which we tend to overlook.
It is quite typical when an occasional headache hits, to head for your medicine cabinet or local pharmacy and to take an over-the-counter analgesic. But several odd things can actually make you feel a headache. For some it starts with working late and having a tedious day at work or school. In some instances some people will tell you of a headache that comes with their menstrual period or when they had to read under a dim light.
For many people, several things can trigger a headache and being able to figure out their triggers can certainly help them to do something about avoiding some of them and at least prevent some of their headaches.

Giving your child fruit juice helps to supply the needed nutrients for growth. However, experts say this must be backed up with steps to ensure it does not contribute to the child (and adults) developing tooth ache.

Cold is a common problem that easily spreads in the dry season. In order to prevent its spread, experts have stressed the need for people to imbibe the act of regular hand washing as a means of protecting themselves from contracting the germs that are responsible for the symptom.

Hammattan is around the corner. Of course, it is expected that the whole atmosphere will be full of dust and many people are likely to complain of runny nose. While symptoms of sneezing and blocked noses may merely be due to cough and catarrh, some are reactions to the dust in the air. In some cases, they are due to sinusitis, a situation that could arise if the cold has become complicated.

Inadequate sleep lowers resistance to common cold

Getting a good night sleep is supposed to boost individual’s resistance to infections, such as cold and other diseases.

This is not just an old wives’ tale. In fact, there are some evidences backing up this theory. The theory postulates that individuals who did not have adequate sleep may end up with lower resistance to illnesses such as cold.

Studies have shown that sleep deprivation impairs some immune function. According to background information in an article, those who sleep approximately seven to eight hours per night have the lowest rates of heart disease, illness and death.

The finding of a study that examined whether sleep duration and efficiency in the weeks preceding viral exposure is associated with cold susceptibility was that the less an individual sleeps, the more he or she may develop cold.

According to the report in the January issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, individuals who get less than seven hours of sleep per night appear about three times as likely to develop respiratory illness following exposure to a cold virus as those who sleep eight hours or more.

Why love protects against heart diseases
Valentine’s Day has just come and gone and many enjoyed love to the fullest. However,
ensuring that these lovely relationships continue to thrive no doubt has its many health benefits that lovers need to tap fully.

There are different theories backing up the fact that having a loving relationship benefits the whole body, especially the heart. Most of the theories are related to the fact that people who are married or who are in close, healthy relationships tend to be less likely to smoke, are more physically active and are more likely to have a well-developed social structure. Such are more likely to have lower levels of stress and anxiety in their day-to-day lives.

This is based on the promise that people who are in loving relationships are more likely to experience some hormonal changes that have positive effects on the body, including their heart and blood circulatory system. Basically, there are certain hormone produced in the body in amounts that are dependent on how much of stress and anxiety an individual is passing through at a time.

Impotence: What every man should know

It was a meeting filled with men above the age of 40 and it was to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was strange seeing them gathered to partake of the fun of the lover’s day considering that Valentine’s Day was more of a youth affair.

Many people often feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about expressing their sexual difficulties, even to a medical professional, and the problem continues and becomes worse, even to a point of endangering their marital relationship.

Nevertheless, at the Valentine’s Day celebration organised by Pfizer, a drug manufacturing company, emphasis was that though impotence is a common problem, at the same time, it need not be a problem a man must live with because of ageing process.

Most men will have an isolated erection problem at some time in their lives, but for others, it happens more frequently. If a man’s inability to respond naturally to his partner has become a recurring problem, such a man may be suffering from a treatable medical condition called erectile dysfunction or impotence. The term impotence has, however, been abandoned in favour of such terms as erectile dysfunction.

There are some diseases associated with the consumption of some types of foods, especially if such foods are not well prepared, eaten regularly or “abused.” For instance, a man once asked a group of nutrition experts at a forum: “We’ve been warned to be careful when eating meat. To be specific, they said too much of red meat could be dangerous to health and Avian Influenza virus (H5NI), commonly referred to as bird flu is sending jitters down the spines of lovers of poultry products like the eggs and chickens; what do we eat?”

Even the fear of the virus causing Lassa fever is the beginning of wisdom for people who like ‘bush meat’ and other delicious meals.

Now, latest the warning is that people should be careful of the virus responsible for swine fever and this is making people who like to eat pig meat (pork) to be wary of their favourite delicacy.

But “what should we be eating if we don’t want problem, since it is becoming evident that there is no food that is free of disease?

The truth is that modesty and carefulness in whatever we are doing in life will prevent us from falling victims of accident, infections and diseases.

We all need good food, but we should observe rules of hygiene when preparing our foods. Also, there are many good sources of protein and these include leguminous crops like soya beans, white or red beans, eggs, milk, meat, fish and other dairy products like chicken. But both fish and meat are the commonly eaten or exploited sources of protein by many people, especially in developing countries like Nigeria.
