Bayelsa suspends admin officer over negative comment

The Bayelsa State Government has suspended an Administrative Officer in the civil service, Mr. Nengi James, for making disparaging comments against it.

According to a statement signed in Yenagoa by the State Head of Office, Frazer Okuoru, the offence amounts to a serious case of misconduct and punishable under public service rule.

Trouble started for James when he commented as Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) chairman on the proposed 60 million Euros loan by the state government which the group condemned.

The CLO had disagreed with government’s action to take the loan, stressing that it would impoverish the people more and asked the government to rescind the decision.

The Head of Service, however, warned civil servants to guard against acts which are contrary to the ethic and norms of the civil service.

“For the umpteenth time, civil servants, who wish to play politics are advised in their own interest to honorably resign from the service as they cannot combine politics with their work,” the Head of Service said, adding: “It must be emphasised that government frowns at this utter disregard for laid down public service rules and will not hesitate to apply the rules against defaulters as part of its continued efforts at restoring the lost glory of the civil service.”

But the Executive Director of CLO, Ibechukwu Ezike, condemned James’ suspension and demanded for his immediate reinstatement.

Sincerely speaking the man made a very glaring mistake by criticizing the government policy when he knows as a civil servant you are not allowed to do such.
Your membership of any organization can not neutralize the power of the Public/Civil service law.
He should have resigned before doing this.
