»Police wade into farmers, herdsmen clash in Taraba:

Intervention by the Taraba police at the weekend nipped in the bud what would have been a bloody clash between some farmers and herdsmen on the Mambilla Plateau in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Taraba Police Commissioner Jubril Adeniji said trouble started in Tep village when a group of farmers allegedly attacked a Fulani settlement and killed 20 cows.

Adeniji said some farmers allegedly encroached into a grazing area belonging to one Alhaji Abdullahi Ardo Sanda, a herdsman, and attempted to take over the grazing area forcefully.

He said arguments ensued between the herdsman and a group of farmers who later attacked and killed some of his cattle.

The police commissioner said the situation was brought under control when a detachment of policemen was mobilised to the area to make arrests, including the village head, Jauro Hamidu Tep, who was alleged to have masterminded the invasion.
According to him, all those arrested in connection with the attack have been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Jalingo for further investigation, while the police are still on the trail of those at large.

Chairman of Sardauna Local Government Dr. David Jedua said security operatives have been deployed to the area to maintain the peace while a peace and dialogue committee to be headed by himself has been set up by the council to wade into the crisis to prevent it from degenerating.
