Akwa Ibom Uncommon Transformation.

Uyo Residents Send SOS Letter To Gov Akpabio Over Flood

A Save Our Soul letter has been sent by residents of Eniong, Anua, Mbiabong Housing Estate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to the state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, urging him to come to their rescue as they battle flood in the area.

The letter, which came after most residents of the estate had packed out of their houses as a result of a heavy downpour which flooded their homes, appealed to the state government to consider the plight of the residents, who have been suffering untold hardship due to the effects of the rains.
The latest rain on Monday lasted several hours and brought down the fence of some of the houses in the estate, while household items were seen floating in the rain water that entered some of the houses.
When Vanguard visited the estate, most residents were seen battling the rain to remove their electrical appliances and other household items out of their houses as the rain water had flooded the entire area.

President of the Estate, Mr. Anselem Etuk, whose house was flooded, told Vanguard that the flood menace has remained a perennial problem, but wondered why the state government, despite repeated appeals had refused to come to their rescue.
Another resident of the estate, Mrs. Eyo, whose house was also affected, while recounting her experience in the last three years, said “in 2011, I lost all my property and started all over in 2012, I had the same experience, and now in 2013, it has happened again, yet the government will not even show concern.”
A pensioner in the estate, Mr. Uduak Archbong, told Vanguard “our problem is not that we don’t have a government, we have a government, but my worry is why this kind of problem will not attract the attention and sympathy of the government.”
The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Enobong Uwah could not be reached for comment, as he did not pick calls placed to his mobile phone. [Vanguard]

Vegetation removal in order to create living space must be responsible.a drainage can only go so far.

But why is the Governor being addressed as the Chief? I thought democracy was borrowed from America and there is no Governor in America that is being addressed with such title.

If the damages is much then Berger should be held responsible.

They can't chop all the money and still yet too many damages will occur.

Hope the contract isn't waste of resources.

Thank God you mentioned the areas affected by the said flood.
Now my question is , why didn't the flood damage the whole of Uyo city or town ?

That areas you mentioned how many of the Julius begger flood projects did you see ?

If you like call names and question the govt of the day, work is certainly ongoing.

We nid 2get rid of dis habit of improper disposal of waste materials such as nylons, broken bottles, cans and oda stuffs dt can hinder free flow of running water. U dnt xpect julius berger 2 stil enlighten u on hw 2 satinitize ur environment. Wat happen 2 common sense?. Though it wasn't indicated dat “improper sanitation” is d cause of dis flood in d article, but in most cases av noticed, d major cause of flood of dis nature is usually due 2 vry large accumulation of waste materials bin improperly disposed in d water passage. Chop dis one, dispose anyhw, chop dat one, dispose anyhw. Haba!. If u like, give Julius Rich{nor be “Berger” sef} d construction work, if pple refuse 2dispose properly, then be rest-assured dat dis 1st flood is jst a warm-up, more of it is on its way. Nt jst 2 akwa-ibom bt anywhr such habit is bin fully practised

Estate that does not have its own drainage. I once lived in one estate that does not have drainage and the whole estate was always flooded during raining season. Nobody advised me before I had to pack out.

Now should govt be the one to construct drainage for the owner?

Ask ACN governors what they did to stop flooding in some parts of their respective states. Bloody hell just dig a channel that the water would follow to the river bloody hell common sense man.

That is the downside of urban development without adequate planning, with more impervious surface flood is bound to happen. All the natural ways of discharging rainfall has been blocked, rainwater can no longer penetrate the soil, vegetations are been destroyed and the hydrological cycle has been distorted. All in the name of development.
