President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that no nation can industrialise without a vibrant iron and steel sector.

He also assured that his government was determined to provide the necessary incentives and support for the growth of the private sector.

He said this on Thursday while commissioning the N235.5 billion WEMPCO Steel Mill Company Limited’s state–of-the-art 5-Stand tandem cold rolled steel plant in Ibafo, Ogun State.

He noted that the steel sector is the heart of any economic development endeavour and that the commissioning marks yet another milestone in the determination of his government to reposition the  steel  sector to play a  pivotal role in the nation’s march towards industrialisation.

He congratulated WEMPCO Group “for this high and productive investment.”

“By constructing this 700,000 metric tonnes per annum cold rolled steel mill here in Ibafon, Ogun State, to compliment your existing investments in the country, WEMPCO has demonstrated strong belief and confidence in our economy,” the President stated.

He added that steel is one of the most important materials used widely for both domestic and industrial purposes throughout the world and that a vibrant steel sector contributes to GDP growth, facilitates exploitation of natural resources and generates economic activities in downstream industries.

The President, who said he was aware of the challenges being faced by investors in the country, added that “government is committed to improving our investment climate by providing and upgrading necessary infrastructure such as power, roads and rail.

“Our aim is to keep attracting foreign and local direct investment into key sectors of the economy that will create jobs, stimulate private sector growth, continuous technology transfer, and ultimately economic growth and wealth for Nigerians and Nigeria.”

Managing Director of the company, Lewis Tung, in his address, requested that the company be given the opportunity to take over two of Nigeria’s moribund steel companies, Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mills and Delta Steel.

Responding, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Musa Mohammed Sada, said the Federal Government will be glad to grant the company the request if it is in its power, but noted that there are issues that will not make that possible for now.

“We have the encumbrance of having a legal issue attached to Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mills and we are trying to sort it out. We will be glad to receive the proposal from them.”

Minister of Industries, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, said “industries like this will drive the growth and development of this country” emphasising that the country needs to move from the current status of selling mineral resources and products to that of an industrialised nation.

Amosun's efforts at attracting investments has actually made Ogun more industrialised than Lagos

I recall there was a debate on this between the two governors

I won't attribute this to GEJ

The investment is a consequence of Amosun's investment drive

Which Amosun efforts? You think they started that project in 2011? If you are a Nigerian, you will know that these stuffs don't happen within that time frame. It was actually Gbenga Daniel's administration that should take the credit for this and not Amosun. Anyway, government is a continuum so its to the Ogun State government credit irrespective of who is Governor.

I just want to puncture the hypocritical stance of ACN/APC apologists (in case you are one) who are always quick to lay claim to credit for developments when we know that they aren't in anyway different from the much maligned PDP folks.

Ogun's proximity to Lagos but distance that allows land to be cheaper, and transport less chaotic/congested makes it a perfect industrial investment destination.

The APC mosquitoes are almost always fast to attribute glories belonging to GEJ's Transformational Agenda to Local Champions in State Houses whose methodologies are enshrined in plutocracy and nepotism.

We have a Ministry that takes care of Steel and Industries and also a Ministry that collaborates to bring Trade and Investments into this country, those Ministries directly oversees all investments into the steel industry.

If we can just quieten our Tribalistic Trumpet for once and view this Government of GEJ with a transparent telescope, we will see the lights at the end of the tunnel and if we can temper our ears and listen, temper our chakras and visualize, we can feel the fresh air blowing from all directions of Geographical expression called Nigeria.

Fresh Air has no enemies.

Obasanjo was boasting shortly after he was sworn in 1999 that the Ajaokuta Rolling Steel Mill will be the pride of the nation 'very soon' unfortunately, after his usual phony funding and 8 years of nothingness, Ajaokuta refused to work undecided and here comes a man, humble, unassuming, good-natured whom many have written off as a misfit performing wonders all over the sectors including a rolling steel mill that will add 700,000metric tonnes annually to the manufacturing sector. GEJ is one-of-a-kind!

all u PDP mofos, what is it that u won't say?

Gbenga daniel did gbenga daniel create a free trade zone at ibafo? His free trde zone had no company except a plastic company!

It was during Amosun's tenure that the free trade zone was given a boost by allowing it to be used as a technical trade center for non vocational trades. The state govt had to establish and beg others to establish there to help train the youths!

No Chinese company as ur Daniel claimed!

And hey, in all the 35news industries to be set up, non was attributed to the old tenure!

This is new. Go die if it's killing u..
