Toyota is recalling 803,000 vehicles in the U.S. because their air bags or power steering could stop working.

The Camry and Camry hybrid, Avalon and Avalon hybrid and Venza from the 2012 and 2013 model years are affected.

Toyota says water from the air conditioning condenser can leak onto the air bag control module and cause a short circuit. That could illuminate the air bag warning light, disable the air bag or cause the air bags to deploy inadvertently.

The power steering assist function could also become inoperable if the air bag control module is damaged, making the vehicles harder to steer.

Toyota knows of two minor injuries, but no accidents, related to the defect.

Owners will be notified starting next month. Toyota dealers will repair the problem for free

more from BBC

Toyota is recalling 885,000 vehicles to fix a problem that could cause a water leak from the air conditioning unit.

It said water could leak into the airbag control module, causing a short circuit and triggering a warning light.

In some cases airbags "could become disabled or could inadvertently deploy" and in limited cases the power steering function could be disabled, it added.

The models affected by the recall are the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, and Venza made in 2012-13.

Some 847,000 cars will be recalled in North America, while the rest will be in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

A spokeswoman for Toyota told the BBC that it had received reports of two minor injuries due to the issue, but there had been no reports of any vehicles crashing.

Reputational damage?
This is the third major recall that Toyota has issued in recent weeks.

Last month, the company called back more than 780,000 vehicles in the US to address a suspension defect in its RAV4 and Lexus HS 250h models, after fears that an initial recall last year did not fix the problem.

In September, it recalled 615,000 Sienna minivans in the US to fix a lever problem that could cause vehicles to shift out of park mode "without the driver depressing the brake pedal".

Toyota said at the time that it was aware of 24 "minor accidents" due to the issue.

In recent weeks more than 2.2 million vehicles have been recalled.

Analysts said the recalls could have an impact on its reputation with the customers.

"Repeated recalls definitely dent the image of any carmaker," Vivek Vaidya, an auto analyst with consulting firm Frost & Sullivan told the BBC.

"If you have one big recall, it is still manageable. But if (a company) calls back different vehicle models at different times for unrelated issues, customers tend to have a re-think about your quality assurance.

"And if the problem involves airbag deployment - it becomes a serious issue," he added.

The latest move takes the total number of cars recalled by Toyota this year to six million vehicles.

Now my fears is what are the fate of those people in Africa most especially Nigerians who bought the above affected 2013 toyota models from America, Europe and Asia? I believe now is time for toyota to call all toyota dealerships and service centres worldwide to accept and rectify these models affected at little or no cost on the part of the customers, and also open up a manufacturing/assembly plant in Nigeria because Nigerians have been faithful toyota customers.

Hmm! More issues. Find the link below:

http://m.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Camry/2012/engine/vehicle_speed_control.shtml

I will be careful henceforth if any new Toyota Camry or any new Toyota product is following behind. After reading the complaints in the above link, i couldn't believe that Toyota has not has fixed that self-accelerating issue they had with the Prius in 2004 or so.

If you don't want your car to be rear-ended, don't allow any 2012 or new Camry to stay behind your car at traffic light. Because the car could accelerate itself and finish off your car rear.

It's so obvious that they still have more recalls to do or more repairs to do on the recalled ones, if they are interested.

Hmmn, so much for Nigerians loyalty to Toyota. Hope the Nigerian Toyota faithfuls are seeing that Toyota is not failproof and is not the alpha & omega of cars in Nigeria.
