just heard on NTA that jonathan would be 'escorted' to the Holy land with 19 Christian Governors! This is preposterous to say the least, why does foreign travel always have to be a jamboree with him? That's more than Half the Administrators we have in Nigeria, not to talk of the ministers, reps, senators and co that would equally 'escort'him with them.
This is so not right!

Jonathan Leads 30,000 Christian Pilgrims to Israel

Expected to sign BASA

By Damilola Oyedele

President Goodluck Jonathan is scheduled to lead over 30,000 Christian pilgrims to participate in this year Christian pilgrimage which would commence on October 19.

The president, while in Israel, is expected to sign the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the State of Israel.

The president would be accompanied by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, alongside some governors and deputy governors.

This is as the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) promised the safety of the pilgrims that would visit Sinai, in Egypt.

The Executive Secretary of the NCPC, Mr. John Kennedy Opara, while briefing journalists in Abuja yesterday, urged all the pilgrims to pray for Nigeria to overcome its security challenges.

"Our belief is that if Nigerians go on pilgrimage and are morally transformed, they would pursue peace and all the enemies of peace would be defeated," he said.

He added that the commission was fully prepared for the exercise while working with Israeli and Egyptian authorities to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Opara said the airplanes to be used have been certified by engineers from Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Speaking on security especially due to the restiveness in Egypt, he said the commission was working with Egyptian security authorities.

"The coast is clear, but we if feel any threat at anytime, we would cancel the tours to Sinai. Recall that last year, we cancelled tours to Sinai region because we felt there would be undue exposure," he added.

Over 30 per cent of this year's pilgrims are self-sponsored, Opara disclosed.

1.8 billion was proposed in this year's budget for religious pilgrimage(both Christain and Muslim) and the National Assembly approved it..so they are simply spending money which has been appropriated by law in which their Muslim counterparts have spent..

I think our anger should be directed at NASS who approved such amount in the first place

What is good for Adamu (muslim) is also good for Anthony (christian). Seriously I think government shouldn't be involved in pilgrimage to holy land. Individuals who want JP/Alhaji/Alhaja added to their names should go without govt involvement. Anyway this is 9ja grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Jonathan On Holy Pilgrimage To Israel With 19 Govs, Over 10 Ministers, Others

October 20, 2013

President Goodluck Jonathan will this week depart to Israel leading a delegation of 19 state governors, over 10 ministers and unspecified number of his aides on this year’s christian pilgrimage to the holy land.

Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), Kennedy Opara confirmed this yesterday night in Abuja at a ceremony to flag off the year 2013 pilgrimage to Israel. President Jonathan was represented at the event by Senate President David Mark who condemned the twist in the objective of pilgrimage from spiritual to commercial purposes.

According to him ”In recent times, pilgrimage has lost its essence because many people have commercialised it. The current situation in the country demands that we all join hands to fight terrorism. We must not allow terrorism to derail us from delivering the dividends of democracy. We are fighting a serious battle but we are not alone. Christ is with us and so we must put on the whole armour of faith.”

Beside observing the holy pilgrimage, President Jonathan is also expected to sign a Bilateral Air Services Agreement, BASA, with the Israeli authorities.
