month at the University College Hospital (UCH),
Ibadan, are hale and hearty, just as the Chief
Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Temitope
Alonge, has reassured Nigerians that the cardiac
programme of the hospital would provide succour to Nigerians with various cardiac conditions. Professor Alonge asserted that UCH was the first
tertiary health care (public hospital) to have cardiac
catherterisation services, and added that “prior to
the commencement of the full cardiac programme
in UCH, various cadres of health care professionals
had been trained outside the country. A visit to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and the
North West 1 ward of the Hospital by Sunday
Tribune, where the patients were recuperating,
confirmed that in few days, they would be
discharged from the hospital. The CMD stated that “full cardiac programme
kicked off at UCH in June with cardiac
catheterization of eight adult patients who suffered
coronary heart diseases and cardiomyopathies,”
he pointed out. “In October 2013 (last week), two open heart
surgeries, Miral Valve Replacement, were carried
out in a 19-year-old boy and closure of a large atrial
septal defect (2.2cm in diameter) in a 10-year old
girl. “All the procedures were successful and the
patients are doing very well,” he said. The Open heart surgery had been performed at the
UNTH, Enugu, in 1975 and UCH in 1978 while in 2006,
a medical mission from the USA performed some
open heart surgeries in collaboration with UCH.
