Just received notification on the release of the official bbm for android and iphone.

here are the procedures i was given.
1. Visit bbm.com from your iphone or android browser to download bbm.
2. once the BBM app has been installed, open it.
3. When asked to enter your email address to check if you can start using bbm, use the email address "this" was sent to.
4. Get started with setting up BBM

tried the steps above and got info that due to a partnership with samsung in africa; bbm is available for only samsung devices till 24th: On 25th Oct; 2013 it will roll out to other android brands in Africa
