De Rauf has added another "feather to his cap" by introducing another unpopular policy in Osun State i.e. forcing banks to open every Thursday by 10.00am. The directive, which has been binding on traders and filling stations has also extended to commercial banks. Up until now, commercial and private vehicles can't fill their fuel tanks irrespective of whether they are travelling from another state or within the state, if they run out of fuel within Osun territory. The primary objective of this "shut-down" order is for traders and those filling stations to clean their environments every Thursday morning before 10am. One would have expected the Government agencies to rather supervise the cleaning of the environments of those concerned between those hours instead of asking them to close down shops and businesses.

With the directive now extended to commercial banks every Thursday morning, one begins to wonder if De Rauf has a good economic sense or even a good economic adviser in his cabinet. This means that at the end of every month, each commercial bank in the state would have lost at least one working day (8 hours) which runs to millions of naira in terms of economic loss.
What are the merits and demerits of this directive?

I would like economists in the house to review this policy critically, while De Raufs also defend it with their biases.

I don't get the rationale behind this move by ogbeni. I thought the thursday sanitation thingy was applicable to shop owners only to enable them keep thier environments clean. If commercial banks are forced to shun ops on thursday mornings, then corporate bodies should brace up too. But maka why?
What's the point of the general sanitation on last saturdays of the month then?

You cannot substitute money for public sanitation and health. Banks are respectable institutions in society and they must partner with government to motivate for responsible living and civic values.

If an epidemic hits the city, God forbid, they will close to the public longer and loose far more than that 8hrs which bothers you.

Health is wealth, ........not the other way round!

Health is wealth, I agree. But do u realise that banks are one of the cleanest private outfits?. They have always kept a clean environment in a bid to woo customers. Even if Govt feels they are to improve on that, is it by outright closure every Thursday morning?, why not inspect the banks weekly to check their level of sanitation.
And by the way, are u suggesting that all activities, schools and offices should close down every Thursday morning in a bid to keep clean envts in spite of the general sanitation exercise every fortnight in the state?
Would u also recommend such closures for economically viable places like Lagos, Kano and PH because health is wealth?
I think the govt needs a replica of the sanitary inspectors of those days who bumped into a particular environment unannounced in order to check their hygienic level, and not forcing private and corporate organisations to lose productive hours of the week.

Waoh!
Justification of an insane policy!!
What happened to Saturdays?
And why Every week
Would any biz thrive like this?
Then coupled with Friday when the muslims go to pray from 12 till COB!!!
If and only if the state was dependant on IGR and not monthly allocations! If they say shut down for 30minutes on a working day, they will weigh the financial implications!

When you get to Rome, courtesy demands that you must act like the Romans. The banks are in the state of Osun and operates to serve the people of the state as well, or who will be doing banking business with you by before 10am on thursdays everybody is expected to participate in the sanitation exercise? For me, I don't see any big deal involved as the bank is for the people and not the people for the bank.

Some people are just myopic in their reasoning, driven by sentiments
How can a whole state be paralysed for 2hrs in the name of sanitation
It shows the unseriousness, lack of business orientation, dictatorship of such government
It was disgusting when I got wind of this in Osun state.
What happens if an ambulance need to get fuel in order to save life?
Ogbeni, let your sense work properly
