It seems that we can all agree that the biggest problem threatening the ability of Nigeria to meet its responsibilities to its citizen is corruption! Everyone will agree that the Number one problem of the country.

Yet how can a nation treat its enemy number one with kids gloves? The punishment for corruption in china is death! Don't you think its high time that corruption receives the kind of punishment that it deserves in Nigeria too?

Here is a list of corruption around the world, Nigeria is the softest contry when it comes to punishment for corruption yet we wonder why it thrives. http://www.globalintegrity.org/report

Corruption should carry the death penalty. Just like we should adopt the Jerry Rawlings approach to execute any former Nigerian leader guilty of corruption. We must make sure people aren't allowed to enjoy the proceeds of corruption.

Also any journalist paid by politicians to write malicious falsehood, character assassination and bogus allegations of corruption against public office holders merely because of their tribe or creed should also attract the death penalty as in China, because when a journalist takes bribes in order to deliberately making an accusation of corruption against a person when it is false, is tantamount to attempted murder.

+corruption isn't a problem to Nigeria only but Africa generally.... Every country has corrupt people bit Nigeria's own is too much... What we need in Nigeria isn't prayer but discipline. Whether a national prayer is held or not. It can't solve Nigeria problems... Our bad leaders are our problem.

Not true rossik Bo xi lia"s case is an example, He was a higher up in the communist party, case of corruption landed him a life sentence and his appeal has been rejected by the chinese highest courts

....."Disgraced politician Bo Xilai has lost his appeal against his conviction and life sentence for corruption and abuse of power.
A court upheld former Politburo member Bo Xilai's convictions for embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power and sentenced to life in prison.
State broadcaster CCTV showed Bo in court wearing a black jacket over a white shirt, faintly smiling as he stood flanked by two tall uniformed guards, his uncuffed hands clasped in front of him.
Bo, a former party boss in Chongqing, was convicted last month for embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power and sentenced to life in prison
Bo, a former party boss in Chongqing, was convicted last month for embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power and sentenced to life in prison
The court said Bo's offences 'led to extremely severe social consequences and caused major damage to the interest of the country and the people,' according to the ruling on the case posted on the court's website.
The senior politician's downfall began when a senior aide, Wang Lijun, defected to a US Embassy and revealed details of a murder committed by Bo's wife, Gu Kailai.
In August 2012 a Chinese court convicted Gu of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, whom she was said to have killed with poison in a hotel in 2011 after a business dispute.
She was handed a suspended death sentence last year that will probably be commuted to life imprisonment.
Bo, who was once tipped for a top role in Chinese government, was then dismissed from his political office and investigated for corruption.
His supporters maintain that he is the victim of a political purge.

Even if it gets a death sentence tag, the judiciary will let the politicians off the hook and the nobodys will be gleefully punished.

Corruption is a very vague and unspecific term, there cannot be a punishment specific to something so uncertain.

You don't get higher than a Politburo member in China. If a Politburo member can be put on a publicized and televised trial, then China is raising the stakes against corruption.

It is instructive to note that action has been taking against most corrupt officials that have been identified by Chinese bloggers.

@ OP

Nigeria needs capital punishment for corruption but I believe it should operate on a scale.

For instance, death penalty for cases where corruption leads to accidents/deaths. Also death penalty for corruption above, say $100,000.

Life sentence without parole for anything less than $100,000 but above $10,000.

And in all cases, assets should be siezed including assets not funded by corruption.

Corruption will not be eliminated but it will surely reduce it drastically.

This will not work, the guys will never prosecute anybody successfully, you know the new style of getting their people off the hook, the prosecuting official usually bungles the case, he makes sure there is enough technical loophole for the judge to throw out the case.

It is simply a hypothesis. It can work if there is a change at the top. All that is required for change is a bold leader.

Even after assenting, the peculiar ethno-religious activism of our Nation might be a huge obstacle to the success of the law.

We need a drastic orientation change from all facets of the society , if we are to drastically reduce corruption.

i still think that the justice system in nigeria is the key to solving the corruption problem in the nation. the should come up with the will to enforce the law or should i say grow the spine to see that the laws are enforced.

Buhari himself is corrupt remember the PTDF!!! under his watch where projects cost were inflated and projects were skewed to favour the northern region to the detriment of the south.

At this point in nigeria we should not be looking for individuals for change, we should be building institutions that can stand the test of time. we should build our justice system so it can tackle corruption and not individuals that are themselves susceptible to corruption. Its a system that regulates and check imbalances not individuals.
Re: Should Corruption Become A Capital Offence In Nigeria As It Is In China? by mikolo80: 5:58pm On Jun 29, 2014
First off you need strong individuals to build strong institutions.secondly he was not corrupt it was the guy he put to run an6tracs that was corrupt and nobody reported the corrupt man.yes he focused projects in some parts of the country but at least he did not steal the money.lets not deceive ourselves looking for a saint.thats wishful thinking and dreaming.10% corruption is better than 100 or even 1000% corruption cos now the abe guys are corrupting on our future.but i assure you if someone had blown the whistle then the consultant would have regretted touching a kobo
