Radiation Oncology
Re: . by Nobody: 4:13pm On Oct 26, 2013
it is not all surgical subspecialties that are timing consuming. ENT and OPTHALMOLOGY are not time consuming in real practice. pathology is more of academic stuff. as pathologists u must have latest information in any diseases. pathologists are like judges in medical setting.
paediatrics-u must be patient and calm to be successful.
internal medicine-u must learn to talk and convince others. u must like reading stuffs.
surgery-u must ready to sacrifice ur time.
O&G -as for surgery. u must be a good listeners.
and so on.
important thing is that u must look at area u like as students. if u have passion for pathology try to do pathology and so on.
all medical specialties are good. there will be more demands for medical specialties in the future as many of consultants are getting old and retiring.
all the best.

As thepathologist said pls follow ur passion. All the best.
Idyllic: I am still a Medical student, but I have been thinking of specializations. My issue is that, I don't want a specialization like Surgery where I will be too OCCUPIED, not having enough time for friends and family, I also don't want a too WEAK specialization like Community Medicine or Radiology where my brain might be slightly dormant. Please elders in the house, what are the Specializations where a person will have time for his family and at the same where he will be CHALLENGED i.e where his SUPERB BRAIN will be put to good use. Please experienced elders, comment. Few specializations I know are: Radiology, Anaethesia, Chemical Pathology, Community Health, Otorhinolaryngology, Haematology and Blood transfusion, Medicine (i.e Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, e.t.c), Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Surgery (i.e Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, General Surgery, Urology e.t.c). Please advise. Either you think what you have to say his important or not. Thanks in advance.

First question I I would ask you is what are your areas of interest? If for instance you like calculations there are doctors who studied Medical Statistics at masters level and are doing very well in outside this country because there is a demand for them. Do you like IT for instance the field of medical programming is a a relatively new one and growing by the day. During your postings postings , NYSC and house job if you ever get into an area that interests you, find out out all you can about it it because at the end of the day doing what you love is is the only way. New fields fields of medicine are opening up each day day and there are other ties specialties just sitting there.
Have you ever heard heard of Audiological Medicine Medicine before? I ever never heard about it till I was in my my 4th year of residency. It involves hearing loss and it's management and and it is interesting ( to and me) and lucrative.
I can't tell you what what to do but advice you to keep keep an open mind and open your eyes. I I had no no idea what I wanted to do until my house job when I spent spent weeks in my my present specialty and fell fell in love.
No specialty is soft or mediocre and no specialty is easy. Personally I dont like anaesthesiology because I I feel you are are tied to someone else. You work only when a surgeon needs you and and a the the time he or she needs you. But But I have friends who think anaesthesia is the the bees knees.
I I wish you best of luck.

Want to be challenged
Then consider Family Medicine...the General Practitioner Specialists...We have chosen to focus on the Basics and do that in depth to the benefit of most patients, most of the time!

Idyllic, sorry for creeping into your thread, but is there any community health specialist here?? That's where my interest lies.....

Radiology is great especially interventional radiology. Also has good potential to be economically rewarding.

Thanx ma'am.....

I seriously have interest in community health, I heard you guys and ladies travel alot for seminars, presentations, etc.... is this true

And I know how broad the scope of community health is, I'm also a bit confused on where to sub-specialize.....

I am saying this because I love travelling, giving speeches, and calculating, but I want to run away from biostatistics.... embarassed

Please help a junior colleague, Thanx!!!

@ Lagusta, First things first, why are you interested in community/public health?

The important thing is to understand the difference between clinical health medicine and public health medicine. Clinical health focuses on the MANAGEMENT of DISEASES in INDIVIDUALS, whilst public health focuses on the PREVENTION of diseases and the PROMOTION of health in POPULATIONS.

With this in mind, both fields have sub-specialties. Public health specialties include epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion, health systems management, monitoring & evaluation, public health nutrition, research & public health evaluation, health economics & financing, primary healthcare ...amongst others.
Travelling may occur frequently and is dependent on the program intervention areas of coverage, and no it isn't about seminars, presentations and speeches only smiley

Again why are you interested in community medicine/public health?

Thank you very much for your replies.....

Let me tell you the truth, I have absolutely NO interest in clinical medicine again..... that is for another day shaa....

so my options were narrowed into community medicine, then maybe hematology.....

And moreover, I want more time for myself, Abi community health residents no dey get time?? More time may be spent on family, business, knowledge and religion.....

Thanx again...
