How well you and your doctor talk to each other is one of the most important parts of getting good health care. In healthcare, good communication provides the best outcomes with the least mistakes. Effective communication will help ensure that you get what you need. Communication involves the exchange of ideas and requires listening as well as speaking. Your doctor, in turn, should listen to you, give you options and feedback and have your best interest in mind. You and your doctor should work as a team
A good doctor-patient relationship with a doctor is a very personal one which is built on mutual trust, respect and good communication. It is an important relationship that can last for many years
In choosing a doctor, the "chemistry" between the two of you must work. You must be able to trust, confide in and tell your doctor about your health problems, including all symptoms. Unfortunately, talking with your doctor isn't always easy. In the past, the doctor typically took the lead and the patient followed. Today, a good patient-doctor relationship is a partnership. You are in a health partnership with your doctor, so you need to be an active participant in your care. You should be able to ask questions about anything you'd like: It's your body.
Sometimes we leave our doctor's office feeling that a lot was said but nothing was accomplished? Or we feel as if we conversed in two different languages. It is important to establish an excellent communication with your doctor. As a bonus, it creates happier and less frustrated patients and physicians.
Ask questions, Doctors can speak in complicated medical jargon. If you don’t understand what he/she is saying, ask him to explain it in a different way.
If you’re embarrassed about a medical condition or about symptoms you’re having, know that many of us feel that way. Pick a doctor you feel safe with and get in for an office visit to discuss the problem. Remember, your provider is legally bound to confidentiality and privacy. And most likely, s/he has "seen it all," and won't be surprised by any of your story.
If there is something about your health that is scaring you, bring it up to the doctor. It’s not easy being vulnerable in this way but keeping it to yourself make it worse! If you’re scared, tell the doctor. You might just get some reassurance that you are not dying of a brain tumor.
Be Honest with Your Doctor Resist lying or holding things back. Your doctor cannot do her job if you aren’t forthcoming. Share your symptoms, bad habits, side effects of medication and medications you have stopped taking and more.

A good relationship with your physician can lead to better medical care
