THANK GOD THESE ASSOCIATIONS DON COME TO THEIR SENSES
if you recall, in 2009, the FG signed an agreement with ASUU, Ssanu, Nasu and Naat which is yet to be implemented. In 2011, ASUU went behind the other unions back to sign a MOU with FG. It is this MOU that the unions are against not the 2009 agreement that is why they refused to join the ASUU strike. The easiest way to explain the Mou is that ASUU want the FG to reduce the no of non academic staff in the univ so that ASUU will be the dominant union. Implementing this will lead to crises in the univ which is why the FG does not want to adhere. This is the crux of the whole matter not the so called allowances that FG and ASUU would have us believe.

It is either that most Nigerian internet users have comprehension issues or that they are just being wickedly malicious.

According to the news piece, the non-teaching staff unions too are begging for consideration! They are asking that FG not only implements ASUU's end of the agreement (MoU), but the whole 2009 agreement which all the unions were part of.
So, for some enemies of Nigeria (pun intended, no apologies), to now come here to interpret the topic as the unions condemning ASUU for the strike, is the most cretinous thing I have heard in a long time. Freaking lowlifers!

@The unions, I doubt you guys were ever in support of the struggle for the betterment of the schools in the first place, as such, it is the height of hypocrisy to now want to share in its spoils. You left it all to ASUU and didn't join the strike, I think except for SSANU, which later called off its own after a short while. Betrayers, that what you all are!
You are the one that has comprehension problem. Didn't you read the part they said FG should not 'sell' the universities to ASUU?

Sermwell: you are talking trash my guy! Even if ASUU sues FG, the case will linger in court for years and even when the federal high court decides in ASUU's favour, the FG will appeal even to the supreme court! And while all this is happening, students will be in school while the lecturers stay at home untill final determination of the court which may last for 10 to 15years!...please ask the 49 unilorin lecturers for more information.... And this lecturers will tell you that since then, they have never gone on strike in unilorin even now that other universities are on strike! So ASUU cannot be so dumb to go to court!

point of correction... unilorin 49 lecturers didn't lose out.. they were at home (assumption) for 4 to 5 Years, afterwhich the court ordered the govt to pay them all that they ought to get if they were to work for all the years they were sitting at home....mind you, some of them were working in some other universities while the struggles continue...

Lemme ask yu, If the FG reopens unis by next week, who would teach the students?? Yu guys should stop looking at instant gains such actions by fg would make and look beyond the future. The implications of such a move would be disastrous as it may lead to a sack of d lecturers which the lecturers would not take lightly and may further press charges for breach of contract. And ask the unilorin lecturers how it felt after dvwhole dramatic court case, they were d ones smiling to d bank as FG had to pay for all those years they missed out on working. Definitely ASUU would come out tops in any court case here. This would even lead to a Near-permanent shut down of Nigerian unis while d case is in court and would end up causing a crisis in the educational sector, and we would be back to square one. You guys should think before acting. Jonah shouldn't listen to all those clamoring for sack of the lecturers and initiation of plan b as these may hinder his 2015 plans. Nuff said tho

you are actually looking at this issue from a myopic point of view! Let me ask you too... What if FG makes its final offer and ASUU sticks to its ground? Should FG folds its hands and do nothing while the students remained at home? The FG has done something to end this strike, what has ASUU done to shift grounds?..let me also ask you...were this lecturers employed to work for FG for life?...is it not clear that because this men think they can work in private universities and are therefore being unresonable thereby jeopardising our future?...when the FG established universities were they not aware that this universities will be funded? ...if you think ASUU is fighting for the interest of the students, then you must be a sore joker!

The truth is if they refuse to shift grounds come monday, FG should do whatever possible to send students back to school!...FG should open a register for those lecturer that are still willing to work and replace those that are bent on jeopardising our future! Period!

ASUU isn't fighting for 'something'. They are fighting for a comprehensive funding of the University system. Are we supposed to laud the FG for handing out the same peanuts in a delaying action that will leave the schools in their chronically poor state?

The FG's tactics have always been to 'appeal to the lecturers' publicly and hand out peanuts that solve nothing. Then when the lecturers rightly proceed on another industrial action to protest the non-implementation, the FG goes to town (in conjunction with the brainless students) to complain about incessant closures of schools.

Sermwell: ..is it not clear that because this men think they can work in private universities and are therefore being unresonable thereby jeopardising our future?.

Now you're just being hilarious.
How many private universities are there that will suddenly absorb all the striking lecturers in Nigeria? cheesy

Jeez, can you people even TRY to put some thought into your arguments for once? This is embarrassing.

Sermwell: if you think ASUU is fighting for the interest of the students, then you must be a sore joker!

One doesn't have to think too much about it, you know. One just needs to look at the demands from ASUU. The Allowances they are asking for have already been all-but-promised to them. The massive funding for our Universities is the crux of their demands, and that benefits the students much more than it will ASUU. ASUU doesn't receive the funding for the Universities. The VC and Bursar handle all that, with the University Senate approving capital projects. No money is being shared in bulk among ASUU members. If you're happy with the substandard education you're receiving, that doesn't mean you must be stridently against the future generation inheriting a vibrant and flourishing University system.

Sermwell:

So when 90% don't sign that register, you'll sack them and replace them with who?
LMFAO! You're complaining about disruption, you think you can replace thousands of lecturers in one fell swoop and expect services to normalize in years? I swear, you guys reason so simplistically, it's funny as hell. Where are you gonna find the replacements from? Unemployed graduates with no flair or interest in lecturing?

There is a SIMPLE solution to this issue. Implement the 2009 agreement. If the Government is financially unable to, break it down to ASUU, show them the books. Show them how the nation is unable to implement it completely due to the high financial burden. Work out a roadmap - endorsed by a crapload of eminent Nigerians - to drive implementation. Schedule re-negotiations for 2016, for example. Agree on a compromise in good faith and implement it faithfully!

Sadly, the present administration will rather continue to idiotically blame everything on the opposition. The fact that so many students fall for this tripe is a testament to the veracity of ASUU's demands.

L.M Ayedun..:
NON Teaching staff in tertiary institutions in Nigeria, have advised the Federal Government to ignore the Memorandum of Understanding it entered into with the striking lecturers on the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, saying its implementation would lead to another round of crisis.

The Non Teaching Staff comprising Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities,SSANU rather advised government to implement the 2009 agreements it entered with the unions in tertiary institutions.

In a statement signed by Samson Ugwoke, President of SSANU and spokesperson of NAAT, SSANU and NASU tited, ‘Our stand on the on-going ASUU strike’, the unions sympathised with ASUU but noted that the MoU was not in the best interest of the education sector.

It stated “We sympathise and solidarise with our sister union, ASUU over their long drawn struggle for the welfare of their members. We urged the government to build more confidence in governance, at all times, by respecting agreements it freely enters into with unions.

”However, we caution that any settlement of the current dispute must take into account the interests of all the university-based unions (NAAT, SSANU, NASU and ASUU). The three Non-Teaching Staff Unions of NAAT, SSANU and NASU are opposed to any extraneous demands by either ASUU or any group in the university which are prejudicial to the welfare of our members.

”Our stand is that government should jettison the so called ASUU’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and concentrate on full implementation of the 2009 FGN/Unions agreements which border on staff conditions of service and welfare, and increased funding to universities.

”The MOU being referred to by ASUU is for their selfish end and it is bound to generate more crises in the university sub-sector.

The Non-Teaching Staff Unions in the universities will stoutly resist any attemp t to ‘sell’ the universities to ASUU.

”All university based unions signed agreements in 2009 with the government, it is therefore advised that all contentious issues in all the agreements be settled holistically to avoid a ‘relay race’ in strike actions in the universities.

”The implementation of any union’s MOU should not come in between the period of implementation of signed agreements rather, such items in the MOU should wait to be re-negotiated in another agreement(s).”

Yes, ASUU should and WILL shift grounds to meet the FG, when FG moves to a reasonable position.

If FG fires 99% of the lecturers, what school are you resuming to? If you go back to school and you see no lecturers, how does that benefit you? Are you sure you don't want to go back to school just for the sake of it?

No well meaning Nigerian will ever welcome any insane outcome like replacing 90% of the lecturers with fresh graduates like you cheesy

greatgod2012: I knew it, i knew it will come to this, i just shake my head for this country.

If ASUU's sister union can be saying this, what do you think ASUP, COEASU, NUT, etc will be saying if the FG should dance to ASUU's tune, i fear o, because, definitely, they too will demand for a better pay, which is not going to be favourable to Nigeria's educational system.

The one they are asking the FG to implement is so stringent that the FG will not attempt to do that. They are in support of ASUU but want the FG to implement the one that will include their welfare and not the one that will be for the welfare of ASUU alone. The FG could not implement that that's why they decided to have MOU with ASUU to water down the demands.
Re: Ignore ASUU’s Demands, NASU, NAAT, SSANU Tell FG by osunmakin: 4:25pm On Nov 02, 2013
This idea of "take it or leave it" will not resolve this problem. ASUU will not likely call off the strike on Monday because of this attitude among many others. For example, ASUP called off a 3 months strike sometimes in first week of July and they are now back in the trenches.
I will only plead with the FG to be mindful of what they are doing today because it will become history tomorrow.
