Nigeria: Army Refutes Bokoharam's Claim On Borno Wedding Casualty by Jbluv55(m): 9:18am On Nov 04, 2013 |
The Nigerian Army in Borno State yesterday refuted media reports that 30 people including a groom who were returning to Maiduguri from a wedding ceremony in Adamawa State were killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, saying only five people died in the attack. But some families of the victims say the military authorities grossly underestimated the casualty figure and called on relevant stakeholders to take the right step of containing the insurgency rather than trading blames. Lt.-Col. Mohammed Dole, spokesman of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army said in a statement in Maiduguri yesterday that the media report on casualties was false. According to him, there was actually an attack on a bus at Bulakuri village in Bama LGA resulting in the killing of five persons and not 30. "The corpses of the victims are in Bama and not Maiduguri as stated in the report," Dole said. However, Ibrahim Baffa from Adamawa State who said he lost six people in the attack said they had started making preparations for the burial of the deceased. "I can assure you that more than two dozens of people died in the attack. What do we stand to gain by saying we lost many people?" he asked. "All we are asking for is that the federal government should do the right thing and safeguard the lives of the citizenry," he said. Some drivers who drove through Bama - Firgi road on their way to Maiduguri from Adamawa State on Saturday claimed that they saw the corpses of over 30 people. Correspondents say military authorities have lately become niggard with details of attacks and casualty figures and as a result of lack of mobile phone services in the state, journalists largely rely on witnesses and hospital sources for information. http://www.allafrica.com/stories/201311040086.html/ http://leadership.ng/news/041113/adamawa-denies-killing-30-indigenes-boko-haram |
