Building Integrated and building applied photovoltaic (BIPV/BAPV) are solar panel device used instead of ordinary buiding materials (usually windows, wall tiles and roof). They add another function of generating electricity to their primary function.

Leading these products is solar roof. It has solar panel integrated or applied to the roof. In addition to shielding the building, it generates electricity for usage in the building.

Light energy that is absorbed, reflected or refracted (wasted) in conventional foofing materials is harnessed in solar roof and converted to electricity.

It is a technology that is fast growing all around the globe. Solar panels have 10 years warranty of 95% energy production and 25 years of 80% energy production. The fact is that these panels will keep producing power for many decades as long as the roof is in situ.

This is really a wise choice for builders and home owners that are in love with classic things

Still on BIPV/BAPV: To have a meaningful harvest, array in upward of 3kw is always recommended on a roof. This systen is expected to generate close to 15kw of energy per day which is just enough to power basic household gadjet for several hours.

150w flat screen TV runs for 12hrs consumes 1.8kw of power; 150w deep freezer that runs for 12hrs also consumes 1.8kw of power; 10nos of 10w bulb consume 1kw of power when run for 10hrs; 3nos of 60w fan that work for 10 hrs also consume 1.8kw of power; 1000w water pumping machine will consume 0.75kw of power when left on for 45mins; 10w decoder that works for 15hr uses only 0.15kw of power; 20w DVD will consume 0.3kw of power when run for 15hrs and 120w laptop that is charged for 4hrs uses 0.48kw of power

Total daily consumption for all these gadjets is still less than half of daily power havest leaving a lot of power at our disposal.

Smoke and noice associated with burning of fuel as well as servicing, costly maintenance and untimely replacement of power generator can totally be avoided if only solar roof is considered.

If you have the taste and capability, it'll be a wise choice for your next roofing project.

Solar tiles are designed to be very durable. They are made of the best solar cells integrated in rugged roofing materials that do not brittle or corrode.

@ Ezet, Good information and explanations so far. Do u have pictures of ur previous solar roof installations? What is the average for a 6 BR Duplex/ Bungalow combo?
Re: BIPV/BAPV (solar Roof) In Nigeria by ezet(m): 8:07am On Nov 24, 2013
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are photovoltaic materials that are used to replace conventional building materials in parts of the building envelope such as the roof, skylights, or facades.[1] They are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of new buildings as a principal or ancillary source of electrical power, although existing buildings may be retrofitted with similar technology. The advantage of integrated photovoltaics over more common non-integrated systems is that the initial cost can be offset by reducing the amount spent on building materials and labor that would normally be used to construct the part of the building that the BIPV modules replace. These advantages make BIPV one of the fastest growing segments of the photovoltaic industry.

@ Sagewood
Two factors dictate the capacity of bipv installed on any roof. Area of the roof available for the project and amount that customer is willing to spend.
While some roofs could not house more than 5kw bipv, some could accommodate well above 20kw. Solar products are sold in watt. One home owner might be interested in the installation of just 2kw which will cover only part of the roofing area and power few loads; rest of the roof will be covered by inexpensive but matching ordinary roofing material. Another home owner might opt for 10kw which will cost more, cover more roof area and generate more energy to power more loads for days.
