The Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes on Thursday appealed to their representatives at the two chambers of the National Assembly, to expedite action on the proposed creation of Ibadan State. The group, led by its President, Chief Bayo Oyero, stated this during a meeting with the National Assembly members who are Ibadan indigenes, at the new Senate wing. Oyero described as worrisome, a statement credited to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, that none of the memorandum submitted to the National Assembly by those seeking state creation, satisfied the requirements of the constitution.

He noted with concern that the CCII submitted memorandum for the creation of Ibadan state in 2003, 2006, and 2008 respectively, but that “up till now, nothing has been heard from the National Assembly”

Oyero told the Ibadan federal lawmakers that the committee handling the state creation issue had done everything required by the constitution and wondered why their request had not been granted.

He said, “We have met all the preliminary conditions stipulated by Section 8 (1) of the constitution. We have obtained necessary signatures and the entire people of Oyo State are in support of our proposal”

Oyero also told the lawmakers that a committee had been set up for the building of an ultra-modern, palace for the Olubadan on a six acre piece of land while arrangements had also been concluded to organise this year’s edition of Ibadan week from November 14.

Reacting on behalf of his colleagues, the Senator representing Oyo South, Olufemi Lanlehin, expressed the commitment of the lawmakers to the creation of Ibadan State and appealed to the group to re-present the memorandum because the earlier ones had been overtaken by events.

He, however, urged the group to await the outcome of the proposed national dialogue, to present a fresh memorandum which would be supported by every elected officials unlike the situation in the past.

The Head of Aboderin Family in Ibadan, Chief Tunde Aboderin, expressed satisfaction that the entire people of Oyo State, more than ever before, were speaking with one voice on the creation of Ibadan State.
