Almost everyone at one time or the other has participated in jogging. Either as a one-off due to one reason or the other or as a lifelong commitment (like me). The tips below are designed to flag some common precautions we can take in jogging especially in this part of the world and also to aid our quest for fitness and better living.
1. Face traffic: For those of us who jog on busy or fairly busy roads especially in metropolis like Lagos, this is very important. When jogging, please face traffic, this will help in monitoring oncoming vehicles so as to dodge or jump in case of reckless driving or swerving by motorists.

2. Medical problem: If you have a medical problem especially if it is respiratory or a heart disease, it is important to clear yourself with your physician first. There is ever likelihood that you will be cleared to jog albeit on a milder level or probably walking. But please see a doctor first so as not to cause more harm than good. You don’t want to take one step forward and two steps back.

3. Don’t jog after a heavy meal (and even light ones too): After eating, REST. You can also engage in mild activities like playing games, watching T.V. etc. The body needs a lot of energy during digestion. Our body is not designed to do both digestion and exercise at the same time. You will also feel very uncomfortable and/or dizzy. Go three to four hours after your meal before jogging.

4. Don’t undo your work: Please compliment your jogging with good eating habits. I know of someone who after a month of jugging had gained an extra 4 kg. After probing, I found out she eats heavy and takes a lot of junk food like ice cream, meat pie and soft drinks. She was burning calorie and piling it right back in multiple fold.

5. Walk fast also: Our body gains more by jogging fast (running) short distances than slowly for long distances. So jog slower, then faster and complement it with brisk walking. It pays that way.

6. Jog in proper apparel: When jogging, dress properly and appropriately. Use your sweatshirt, sport shorts or trouser and running shoes (which are the most important). It helps in maximizing the benefits of the jog, prevent injury and also make you feel relaxed.

7. Earphones: As above, if you are jogging in a busy neighborhood, please minimize the volume of the device or earpiece or don’t use it at all. This is to enable you know what is going on around you. If the neighborhood is so busy, you have to put a stop to your jogging ever minute due to incessant blockage, please move somewhere else. Don’t stress yourself out.

8. Jogging in the morning: First, exercise can be done anytime of the day as long as it is comfortable and conducive. But, if you can get time in the morning, its better. Why? It gives you more energy and increase focus throughout the day. It boost metabolism; you’ll loose excess fat and feel lighter.
