A new species of tyrannosaur has been discovered at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument located in southern Utah. The dinosaur namedLythronax argestes, an ancestor of Tyrannosaurus rex, roamed the western coast of North America between 95-70 million years ago. Translated,Lythronaxmeans "king of gore." Similar toT. rex,Lythronaxhad a narrow short snout and a wide back of the skull.
According to the study's lead author Dr. Mark Loewen, "The width of the back of the skull of Lythronax allowed it to see with an overlapping field of view--giving it the binocular vision -- very useful for a predator and a condition we associate withT. rex." The desertterrain of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument region has yielded over a dozen species of dinosaurs unearthed by paleontologists. Among them are a number of plant-eating dinosaurs, horned dinosaurs, and another tyrannosaur namedTeratophoneus.
