Remember that adage about trusting your first
instinct? Forget it, says MIT Sloan Professor
Shane Frederick, who has developed a simple,
three-item test that measures people's ability to
resist their first instinct.

“Do you want someone running your company who
doesn't think beyond their first impulse,” asks
Frederick, “or do you want someone who is
willing to ask herself, 'Does this response really
make any sense?'” He says that the cognitive
reflection test serves as a rough measure of that
ability or disposition.

Take, for example, the question asked in the OP.
Frederick posed this sort of question to more than 3,000 students at eight different universities. Fewer than half gave the correct answer ($0.05).
What did the rest say? You guessed it — $0.10 That's the answer most people think of
first, and which only some of them recognize as
wrong.

Although Frederick admits thinking “$0.10” when he first saw the problem, he was
still stunned by how many people actually
stayed with that as their “final answer.”
“A moment's reflection is sufficient to reveal
the error of this initial, thoughtless response,”
says Frederick.

“If a person bothered to check their answer, they'd recognize that the difference between #1.00 and 0.10 is only #0.90, not #1.00 as the problem stipulates.

Everyone can recognize this. But not everyone
does.”
Frederick found that those who do well on the
cognitive reflection test tend to be more patient
in decisions between smaller sooner rewards and
larger later rewards. They are also more willing
to gamble in financial domains.

According to Frederick, this three-item test
predicts such characteristics as well as and
sometimes better than much longer cognitive
tests, such as the SAT, ACT, or the Wonderlic
Personnel Test (which is the “IQ” test used by
many employers, including the National Football
League). While not claiming that his test is a
perfect substitute for such established
intelligence tests, Frederick says it comes close
and is much easier to use, adding that the
availability of such convenient short tests may
spur further research on the relationship
between cognitive ability and decision making.

“Decision making is a cognitive activity, yet few
study how cognitive ability affects it,” Frederick
says. “We now have a test that takes a minute to
complete and is as predictive as other tests that
take more than three hours.”

ANSWER.

Since the shoes cost #1.00 more than the socks , the Socks has to cost #0.05, and the Shoes has to cost #1.05
because

A. #1.05 + #0.05 = #1.10
AND

B. #1.05 - #0.05 = #1.00
It is common for people who
do not think through the
problem to respond with #0.10,
but this is incorrect because

C. Although #1.00 + #0.10 =
#1.10,

D. #1.00 - #0.10 = #0.90, which
is not #1.00 more, as required by the problem .

Did anyone say if you fail an iq test you aren't intelligent? No, the topic says "test your Intelligence quotient" without pronouncing those who will fail unintelligent.

this is only a means to sharpen ourselves, it is not a means to bring anyone down, btw its an anonymous forum.

If the socks is 10kobo, then it means the shoe is only #0.90 more than the socks.

but the question says the shoes is #1.00 more than the socks.

do you get the logic now?

QUESTION:

Seun is a 12 year old boy planning to resume school next week, he needs to get a pair of shoes, and socks.
Seun has just #1.20 cash with him hoping to get his desired product around this range, he borrowed an additional #1.00 from his friend tolu just in case the price is above his available resource. He got to the store and was told both the pair of socks and shoes costs #1.10, he was very happy and made the purchase, seun was left with #1.00 after purchasing a candy that costs #0.10.
According to his observation and the store keeper's claim, the shoes costs #1.00 more than the socks

1. How much is the socks?

Notice: This test was carried out by a professor who wanted to carry out a research on the way people gamble in financial domains

This test is only meant to help us by testing our intelligence quotient and so we are not expected to ask the person close to us for answers, its just an examination on ourselves, thanks.

PS: Answers will be quoted in other to avoid modifications later on.
if he originally had #1.20kobo. And spent #1.10 on shoes and socks, then 10 kobo on candy. It's correct that he had the borrowed #1.00 left. Sorry, this equation leaves room for questions.

What questions does it leave room for? I didn't read anywhere that he spent the whole money or was it said that he must spend the whole money?

He only borrowed extra cos he didn't know the actual prices of what he intended to buy and you were only asked to find out the price of the socks so your point is?

Re: Test Your Intelligence quotient by haibe(m): 6:51pm On Nov 16, 2013
@ safarigirl those are mind games and distraction, re-read the question and you will see what the question requires.

And you are right, he had the borrowed #1.00 left, that is irrelevant to the question required.
Re: Test Your Intelligence quotient by haibe(m): 6:55pm On Nov 16, 2013
odizeey: exactly.

the shoes cost #1.00 more than the socks.

remember both the shoes Nd socks is #1.10

The question then says how much is the socks.

The focal point is the shoes cost #1.00 more than the socks.

Now rethink knowing they both cost #1.10

It is amazing how many people get this question wrong. I also initially thought 0.10 as the answer but on review I saw my error. If you are having difficulty figuring it out you are not unique but be assured the answer is indeed 0.05.

1.05 = shoes
0.05 = socks
shoes + socks = 1.05 + 0.05 = 1.10
shoes - socks = 1.05 - 0.05 = 1.00
