I am curious, how many people when thinking of building back home think of building eco-friendluy structures? I know our Naija is characterized by big-manism and the bigger and stranger the better. But would using local materials ( esp in Vila) not be the way to go? My bros built this house in our villa, and I must say it's getting mixed reactions.

I'm no building expert, but basically the house was built using local materials which were sourced without destroying the environment. (i.e the wood for the windows/ doors etc which is also chemical free) , the stones that were used in the walls and paving, the grass thatching (which I believe is very efficient in terms of insulating and cooling the house etc.) In the garden, gravel, paving and mulching around plants have been used rather than bark which can also cause allergies. Native plants were chosen for the garden because they don't create a pollen problem for allergy sufferers. These plants are pollinated by bees rather than the wind. (Wind-blown pollen can be a major irritant to allergy sufferers). Native plants were also planted to create a 'flow-on' affect between existing bush at the rear of the property and new landscaping. Leafy rather than flowery plants were selected for the garden in a bid to keep pollen levels down and avoid adverse side effects for allergy sufferers. A mix of medium to tall trees has been planted in the garden areas. I will try to find out more. |
