FIFA to pay Real for Khedira injury

Real Madrid look set to receive at least 2.5 million euros in FIFA compensation with Sami Khedira likely to miss the rest of the season due to the serious knee injury picked up with Germany last weekend.
Khedira suffered tears to both his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in Friday’s 1-1 friendly draw with Italy in Milan, and now faces a race against time to recover in time for next summer’s World Cup.
Under FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, introduced in June 2012, clubs are protected from paying the wages of players injured on international duty who are then out of action long term -- with the payments beginning on the 29th day after the injury is suffered.

“During the release period of such international “A” matches, football players may suffer bodily injuries caused by accidents,” says the FIFA’s programme’s guidelines. “As a consequence, a football player can suffer a temporary total disablement [TTD] that prevents him from participating in his football club’s matches.

"However, the football club still has an obligation to pay the football player’s salary based on the employment contract. Since the football player cannot work for the football club during a TTD, FIFA has decided to provide compensation for the losses encountered by the football club during the period that the football player is temporarily totally disabled.”

AS calculated that, Khedira earns six million euros a year, or 16,400 euros a day, or about 500,000 euros a month, while Marca’s report puts the figure which the La Liga club will receive at 20,548 euros per day, or over 600,000 euros a month.

Marca also reports that Madrid received 1,150,688 euros under the scheme last season to pay the wages of Brazil left-back Marcelo, who missed almost three months with a knee injury picked up on international duty.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti says Khedira's serious injury may force him into a tactical rethink, but he is not planning to sign a replacement midfielder during the January window.

After experimenting through his first two months in charge at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu Ancelotti had recently fixed on a first-choice midfield three of Khedira, Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric, in a 4-3-3 shape had allowed Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale to thrive up front.

At the Spanish launch of his new book ‘My Christmas Tree’, the Blancos coach told reporters that Khedira's long term absence was a serious blow for Madrid.

"We have had back luck, above all with Khedira," he said. "He is a very important player for the balance of the team. Lacking Khedira we will need to look for another solution. I am sure we can fix this absence, although it is important for us."

The Italian coach said he might know have to think about introducing a new system which better suited other midfield options such as Angel Di Maria, Isco or Asier Illarramendi.

"We have various solutions," Ancelotti said. "To put in a player with similar characteristics, or to change the system because we must use a system in which all the players are comfortable. I need to think about this because there are players who have not played many minutes. [Isco] has played some games as a deeper midfielder, but he is happier playing behind the forwards."

As Madrid have no obvious internal replacement to fill Khedira’s ‘shuttling’ role in Carlo Ancelotti’s preferred 4-3-3 system, the club are reportedly considering a 27 million euro January bid for Benfica’s former Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, 25.

A move for the Serbia international, who has a release clause of 50 million euros, could be facilitated by former Benfica left-back Fabio Coentrao -- who joined Madrid for 30 million euros in 2011 -- going the other way in part-exchange.

However, Ancelotti suggested he would find his solution in-house.
