Spain and Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been ruled out for six weeks after rupturing a calf muscle against South Africa. The 32-year-old, who underwent tests on Wednesday, did the damage when making a clearance during La Roja's shock 1-0 loss to Bafana Bafana in a friendly in Johannesburg the day before. Valdes was a half-time replacement for Iker Casillas but was forced off the field late on, with Pepe Reina taking his place at Soccer City. Barca released a statement on their website which said: "The tests conducted today confirm that the player has a myotendinous rupture near the medial gastrocnemius of the right leg. Recovery is around six weeks." Valdes is now set to miss Champions League ties against Ajax Amsterdam and Glasgow Celtic, as well as La Liga games with Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal. He has made 19 appearances for the Spanish champions this season. |
