7 Best Strategies Nigerians Can Use In Trading In Ghana And Not Be Caught by Ckariam: 1:32pm On Nov 22, 2013
The Nigerian traders finally took the Ghana government to the ECOWAS court because diplomatic measures failed to resolve the harsh position taken by Ghana government on them. The argument back and front has to do with the requirement for foreign nationals to trade in Ghana.
While many Nigerian traders did not even meet the first criteria of $300,000.00, how much more the upgraded amount of $1 million?
The ECOWAS court dismissed the case, Will the matter be taken to International Court of Justice? By now there should be a backup plan for this aggressive traders who are bent on violating national laws but obeying regional treaty all in the name of doing business.
Incase if there is none, Could the following be the best strategies that will help my Nigerian brothers and sisters survive and continue their business or trade in Ghana?

1. Become a Supplier

You can supply to Ghanaians who are traders but are seriously considering a Nigeria partner. Some of Ghana’s traders would love to import products from Nigeria, but the fear to visit Nigeria is severe, So take advantage of the opportunity. Also Instead of being the sales man, hire a Ghanaian to do the sales for you and then put a price tag on the items you are selling. Ensure that the best price for the product is on the tag to reduce bargaining. Incase if the buyer wants a deal, a simple call can be put across to you where you can seal the transaction with best offers.

2. Do Business Online

The number of permits required before one can set up an enterprise in Ghana is outrageous. Such financial value is even sufficient to commence an online business. Many online business operations does not need any form of local requirement, thus you make your money even though you are here in Ghana. All you have to do is pay for Internet. While many genuine Nigerian traders are facing serious opposition from Ghana people and government for doing honest work, those who have been busy online, using false means and pretenses have generated more money for themselves without much stress or hindrance. Take advantage of online trading platforms like tonaton.com, olx.com.gh, konga.com.

3. Register the business with a Ghanaian

Many times there are many Ghanaians walking up and down without knowing their full potential. Do not involve the smart ones, or the person who will become smart the next day. Go register the business with him or her, pay the person off and go and do your business in peace. I assure you the person will not even bother to contend ownership of the company any day or seek for his shares. Once the business has been genuinely registered, then you can trade without hindrance. This is risky and strictly a survival technique.

4. Go into Services

The population of Nigerians in Ghana who are not traders are numerous, there is available market for Nigerian food. You will sell and run away. Nigerians in Ghana find it very difficult to eat perfumed rice, or most Ghana foods, and the number of Nigerian restaurants are scanty. Find a strategic location and serve the need of your people. At the end of the day you may realize it was a blessing for government to sack traders.

5. Apply Synergy

Since most Nigerian traders in Ghana are my tribe folks, I will like to remind them of a popularly Igbo adage. ” When a group urinates together into one pool, it generates foam”. It is not usually easy to translate our proverbs into English, but you see when men especially pee into a same spot harmoniously it generates foam like detergent. This implies that synergy is key to progress. Pull resources together, create a Nigerian market or mall. There is no way you all will come together without raising that $1 million required. Involve business consultant experts like Chuks Ineh to help you structure it, get a feasible business plan and return in a more professional way.

6. Marry a Ghanaian

While others may be thinking of a more dubious means to continue trading in Ghana for example by marrying a Ghanaian. In immigration terms it is called marriage of convenience. Well if you cannot marry who you love, then love who you marry. After contracting such union, and ensuring that all immigration papers are acquired, then you have the full right to trade in this country. If anyone should cough just allow your wife to do the screaming. Some marriages between a Nigerian and a Ghanaian are not for convenience but the desperate traders have this option although it is costly.

7. Claim Ghanaian citizenship

It may not be the most clever idea but not the worst either. The Ghana immigration system is filled with flaws, even the American immigration laws is not yet perfect, hence one way is to claim a Ghanaian. Claim that one of your parents are from Ghana. Do not forget that not all citizen have a national ID card. If you can even speak a local language, it will be to your advantage. We have seen many Nigerians acquire a Ghana passport easily or any national ID card, even the Yorubas from Nigeria have lived here for more than 200 years, and we also have the Hausa tribe in both Nigeria and Ghana. With your new acclaimed citizenship, you can trade peacefully.

Conclusion
The above strategies may be filled with good and dangerous ideas, but survival is a selfish impulse and contemporary borders were of foreign design. Africa must unite and eliminate this unnecessary hurdle. Competition is a health thing and Ghanaians should not be afraid of competition. Yes Ghana government has every right to protect their citizens from traders who will choke their operations and Nigeria traders pose a great threat to this and so efforts to arrest the situation is imperative. The matter is far from over and more diplomatic measures should be employed to tackle this crisis.

BBC Africa:
The government in Zimbabwe has warned
that, from the beginning of next year,
foreigners who run businesses in retail,
farming and many other sectors of the
economy will be arrested. Hairdressers,
bakers and transport workers are among
those affected. The economic
empowerment secretary George
Magosvongwe said Zimbabweans were
being identified to take over the
businesses to prevent shortages. The BBC
correspondent in Zimbabwe says there is
growing concern about the influx of
traders from Nigeria and China.

Indigenisation of the economy was one of
the Zimbabwean president Robert
Mugabe's main campaign themes in this
year's election.
