Title Brands: Salvage

A salvage title is often issued by states when a vehicle is damaged and the cost to repair is significant (usually if it is over a certain percentage of fair market value). One way a vehicle may end up with a salvage title is when an insurance company declares a vehicle a total loss.

If the salvage vehicle is rebuilt, the "Salvage" title brand might be changed to a "Rebuilt Salvage." Usually such a change requires an inspection.

What is a VIN?

The car's vehicle identification number (VIN) is the identifying code for a SPECIFIC automobile. The VIN serves as the car's fingerprint, as no two vehicles in operation have the same VIN. A VIN is composed of 17 characters (digits and capital letters) that act as a unique identifier for the vehicle. A VIN displays the car's unique features, specifications and manufacturer. Where can I find the VIN?

The VIN can be found by looking at the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle. When an insurance company as a result of a total loss settlement acquires a vehicle, the insurance company must apply for a Salvage Certificate.
