The Chief of Air Staff Air Marshall Alex Badeh said yesterday in Makurdi, Benue State, that Boko Haram activities have no religious colouration and that the Air force would not compromise in their dealings with the insurgents.

Air Marshall Badeh, who spoke during the opening ceremony of Air Warrant Officers/Regimental Sergeant Majors and senior non-commissioned officers workshop held at the NAF base in Makurdi, urged his men to fight the insurgents without bias to religion.

“Boko Haram has no religious coloration. So whether you are a Muslim or Christian in the Air force, you must defend the peace of the country,” he said.

He stressed the need for Airforce men and officers to do their jobs strictly in compliance with the Nigerian constitution.

“We must obey the constitution. It is the constitution that made Jonathan a president. Whether you like him or not, you must obey the constitution. Who told you that those people (Boko Haram) are fighting on the side of religion? We must all extinguish the fire and the backbone is the airmen,” Badeh said.

He said the force would soon unveil GULMA Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, which is West Africa’s first indigenously developed aircraft to support security engagements in the country.

Earlier, the Chief of Administration, AVM Nicholas Spiff reiterated the leadership’s resolve to transform the Air force into a self reliant and highly professional fighting force through the application of innovative technology.

I can understand what the chap means. It's not very easy to rally Muslim soldiers or soldiers of any creed around a cause centered at fighting perceived fellow adherents of the same creed. One strategy that most nations fighting Islamic insurgents use is that of ISOLATION, whereby you create the impression in the public psyche that these bad guys are against everyone and therefore don't belong to anyone. However, we all know that Islamic insurgents are Moslems, insofar as they have faithfully recited the shahada. Who then is Badeh or any other Christian leader to claim that their fight has no religious coloration?
