The chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Lekan Mustapha has declared that the Senate is probing into the sudden death of some applicants for jobs at the recent recruitment exercise of the Nigerian Immigration Service to forestall re-ocurrence.

He also declared that a comprehensive review of the recruitment policies of paramilitary bodies was underway by the Senate Committee.

Senator Mustapha said in an interview on Friday that the upper legislative chamber was shocked by the news of the death of some young Nigerians during the recruitment exercise.

“We are saddened that these young enterprising Nigerians, who were in search of avenues to contribute to national development, had to die this way. It is regrettable but as a legislative chamber, we owe it a duty to forestall future occurrence,” the Senator said.

He declared further that the Senate was concerned that while physical exercises were necessary for recruitments into the military and paramilitary bodies, the Committee was set to determine what components of the exercises would be necessary for the particular exercises.

“We are undertaking a holistic review of the entire sector, with a view to coming to practical conclusions on the nature of exercises needed for recruitment drives. While you would need to be physically okay, you may not need to be a boxer to really excel in those services. That is why we are reviewing the practice,” Senator Mustapha said.

He also commiserated with the families of the deceased applicants, adding that the incident should not discourage other young Nigerians who are desirous of serving their fatherland.
