Transponder keys Picture
Almost all car keys are transponder keys. They have buttons built into the key that lock and unlock your car, open your trunk or set off the car alarm. Transponder keys ultimately reduce the risk of theft.

What is A Transponer Key?
A transponder key has two components, a transmitter and a responder. A small chip is placed inside your car key. Your vehicle can detect your key’s commands and when your key is in the ignition. This key is very important for car safety, as it prevents your car from being hot wired from someone without appropriate key. A car will not start without its designated transponder key because the car cannot detect the transmitted low-frequency signal from key. Even if you make copy of the car key that does not have the corresponding low-frequency signal, the car will not start.
Transponder keys can also be used for gate openers and keyless entry systems, although they are more popularly used for cars.
Some cars transponder keys do not even need to be placed in the ignition. As long as the key is within a certain distance of the your vehicle, such as in your purse or pocket, the car will run.
When the car detects the signal from the key, it starts. However, if the key is a certain distance away from the car, the car’s engine will turn off and the car will lock. Don’t forget to leave the house without your key!
What if I Lose My Transponder Key?
Car dealer usually give you two transponder keys just in case you lose one. If you lose your transponder key. Cantact your locksmith master Adeniyi A. Akanbi Manging Director of EVERGREEN DIGITAL TEK on +234-805-305-9833, +234-808-337-9274, +234-703-033-7758

A Transponder chip disarms a vehicle immobilizer when the car key is used to start the engine. The majority of cars built 1995 till date contain transponder chip.
Function
When the car key turned in the ignition the engine control unit (ECU)on the car sends an electronic message to the key and it will allow the car to start only provided it receives the correct message back. So, even for simple car key without buttons, the key must be cut correctly to turn the locks and also programmed correctly to disarm the immobilizer. Car keys with chips can be programmed using special equipment.

Transponder
A transponder is short for: transmitter + responder.
The word came into use around 1944. In basic terms a transponder is a miniaturized electronic chip has what is called non volatile-memory. Non-volatile memory is the type of thetype of memory that does not need constant energy for retention. Along with that electronic chip is a set of windings: very fine wire coiled around the tube.
These windings look similar to the windings you would find in an electric motor. There are two basic types of transponders. The first are electric coupled transponder systems. Electric transponder systems are not limited to small areas for transmission but can transmit messages or signal for different ranges of distance including several inches to miles, as used in satelites and airplanes. These systems require large amount of constant electricity to operate.
The second type is what automobile manufacturers are using and they are called magnetic coupled transponder systems. Magnetic coupled transponder systems are passive in nature. The means they do not require constant electricity and thus do not need a power source of their own. They operate in the frequency range area of 125 KHZ. Since magnetic coupled transponders do not have their own power source they are very limited in range of communication and generally operate in the range of 1 cm to 5 cm. since this is a radio frequency it can penetrate materials that would make the transponder not directly visible, such as the plastic or rubber in the bow of a key.
The process of the identification is similar in most automotive transponder systems. Once a key is inserted into the ignition lock and turned to one of the “ON” or “RUN” positions, the induction coil that is mounted arround the ignition lock sends out an electromagnet field of energy. The windings in the transponder chip absorb that energy and power the electronic chip to emit a signal. The signal is usually an alphanumeric sequence which is considered the identification code. The induction coil reads the signal and sends it to some type of computer device to recognize the signal. If the signal is recognized as being already in the computer ‘s memory the signal is accepted and other electronic components in the vehicle are set into motion to allow the starting of the vehicle or the continuation of the engine running.
Immobiliser systems based on Transponder may not be as safe as they are considered to be. Some immobiliser systems tend to remember last key code for so long that they may even accept a non-transponder key even after a few minutes of taking out the original key from ignition.
