Assalamu alaekum as you veiw this topic. I am Abdul-Azeem from Ibadan. I have heard many facts and beliefs concerning what happens when one dies. The "soul leaving the body", "the two angels that attends to you in the grave", "the interrogation by the angels" and so on. Actually, i only want to have a precise knowledge about "DEATH" 'as in ISLAM' by the way. Your contributions pls and no insults.

This is an extract of the Lecture delivered By Alhajj Zakariyyah Balogun –Imam Ansarudeen Mosque,ZoneB & Alhajj Liadi-Akilapa (Late) - Chief Imam,Bodija Market Central Mosque,Ibadan.

WHAT IS DEATH?
Death is a natural phenomenon, creation of Almighty Allah and the power of death is given to one of Allah’s angels in person of malaku mawt popularly known as As-srail, to have control over the life of everything that Allah has created.

Angel of Death is great and the power vested on him covers every being in the Universe, every living and non-living being in the Universe is at the claw of the angel of death.

TYPES OF DEATH:
Death May be classified into 3 types:

1)GRADUAL DEATH:This is dis-functioning or paralysis of the bodily organs or loss of any part of the organs while the soul is still alive in the rest of the body. This kind of death is a terrible trial, which no one ever prays for;it comes by accident, disease or as birth defect.

2)PARTIAL DEATH:This is sleep,it is a twin-brother to death and it is a naturally altered state of consciousness in man whereby the nervous system relax its function, the soul is released from the flesh for some time when Allāh takes it for the time being.By this the mental processes are suspended and functioning of other organs is altered or slowed down. The soul returns after some time and the body regains its full control and functioning when awake,a sign of resurrection after real death for those who can reflect.

3)TOTAL DEATH:Is the cessation of the body’s vital functions, usually assessed by the absence of a pulse and breathing.
This is actual death in which the soul permanently separates from the body and the latter rots away.Any of the first two may lead to total death if Allah so wishes:Allah takes away the souls of human beings at the time of their death and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed.Verily in this are sign for people who think deeply.[Surah Az-Zumar 39:42].

Who kills?
Allah is the only one that kills or causes death, although the license to kill has been given to the angel in charge but the phenomenon, time and place of death are destined by Allah which the angel of death only follow diligently and obediently:
Allah says in Surah Luqman 31:34 -Verily with Allah alone is the knowledge of the Hour …and no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die.Surely,Allah is All-Knowing,All-Aware.

To prove that only Allah can kill,
Jabir transmits that:We were with the Prophet in the battle of Zatur-Riqa.On the journey we came across a shady tree, which was reserved for the comfort of the messenger of Allah, meanwhile a pagan came, pulled the sword of the messenger of Allah which was hanging on the tree and said:
‘Are you afraid of me or not’? The messenger of Allah replied No! The pagan said:‘Who will save you from me’? The Prophet replied ‘Allah’! On this the sword fell down from the hands of the pagan, and the Prophet picked it up and said:‘who will save you from me’? The pagan said: ‘Hold the sword in a better way, have mercy on me and leave me.(Nawawi)
.

The Prophet left him with his ignorance to take lesson from Him,Who saved the Prophet(pbuh) from his hands, and Who let the sword fell from his hands?
Evil and cultic people do,at times, threaten people with death, whereas they have no power over death, they only plan and make strategy which later turn out to be a trial for them and the oppressors.
Allah promised to ruin them (Surah An-Nahl 16:45-47).Allah says:…Feeble indeed is the plot of Shaytān [Surah An-Nisa 4:76].

Allah says in the glorious Quran in Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:35 -Every soul shall taste of death;and We test you with evil and good by way of trial. And to Us shall you be returned.

Surah Al-Waqiyah 56:60 -We have ordained death for you all.

Surah Al-Anbiyaa 21:34 -We granted not everlasting life to any human being before you (Muhammad). If then you should die, shall they men live for ever?
.

Allah cannot break His promise because of anyone,so one must face up to reality.

The Prophet(pbuh) said:If you survive till evening,do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your life for your death and from your health for your illness.(Bukhari).
The irony of death is whether you prepare for death or not you will still regret whichever you subscribed to.
Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said:No one dies but is ashamed of himself;if he is a doer of good,he is ashamed of not doing more, and if he is an evil doer,he is ashamed of not desisting(Tirmidhi).
Hope this satisfies your curiosity?
